Please chime in on scope for little mod seven
« on: May 03, 2009, 02:18:19 PM »
I should probably post this under the optics forum , but this selection has just as much to do with ensuring I scope my mod seven right than anything else. For hunting , I'm using and elite 2-7x32 (great little scope). Thing is a bunch of us guys get together one weekend a month and punch paper. 100-500yards. only rule is you must use your hunting rifle (standing, kneeling, Prone). My little 2-7x32 just cant do it.  My old eyes cannot see the small paper targets at 300yards through the 2-7x32.

I'm looking for input as to a decent target scope I can use on the mod 7  (that wont look stupid on the little remmy but still allow me to be competitive on the weekends. I was all set to pick up a Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32 for 199.00 , but chucky52 picked one up and was not impressed.  I think I've narrowed it down to two other possibilities (please offer others if you want ) please note: $300.00 is really stretching my wallet right now so that is truly my max limit I can afford.

Weaver V series 279.00

FOV@,24.4@4 6.98@16
Exit Pupil 10.5-2.63
Eye Relief,3.13-3
Weight, oz 16.75
Length, in. 14
comes with semi target turrets

OR

Bushnell Elite 3200 304.00
4-12x40mm AO
Reticle   DOA 600 Multi-X
FOV, 26.9/9@4x  9.3@12x

OR
Any other suggestions??

Time to change the rules to level the playing field put a limit on power. If you must. go with the weaver, the japanese are leaps ahead on the others when it comes to optics of any kind. I have a weaver 6x on a 270 curently and would like to put a 10x target scope on my 223. this rig just shoots varmits out to 350 or so.  I must admit I'm a little of a purest when it comes to scopes I like fixed power.
One last note you are going to have an ugly gun with a chunk of glass that big. Model 7's are so sleek and pretty with a slim trim glass on top.

Mueller APV 4.5-14, you should be able to pick it up for less than half of your stated budget.

I had a Burris fixed 4x on my Model 7 (308 Win) and loved it.  Made a nice light, handy rifle.  I'm not a big fan of large optics but I only used it for hunting where 300 yards is farther than I'm comfortable shooting.

I have several Burris Fullfied II with the Ballistic plex, and I love them. You should be able to find a 4.5-14 in your price range.
Get a set of rings/mounts that allow you to swap back and forth from the 2-7 and the target scope. I use the steel weavers and they work great.

My little Elite 2-7x32 looks soooo nice sitting on my mod seven with  weaver steel bases and Weaver Lever lok rings right now.

A few years back a buddy damaged his scope the week before our annual camping/hunting trip...I took my Leupold Compact 3x9x33 off my 541-T and we sighted him in 2 inches high at 100 yards...This was a Model Seven in .260 caliber...That week he killed 3 deer, one a decent buck...

My brother has a Model 7 in 7mm-08 that he has had since the 80s...He has a Leupold 3x9x40 mounted on his...Both work but as you have mentioned, the smaller scope just seems to look right...

You're trying to make a target rifle out of a light, compact, balanced, great handling deer rifle...It's like putting a big block V-8 in a 1968 Volkswagon...

I'm kinda tight, I'd leave it alone...If I did anything, I'd go with a 3x9 Compact scope like the Leupold that I have on my 541-T...

I'd bet that you have no problem killing deer with that gun just like it is... ;D

I'm not trying to make a target rifle out of a deer rifle. For hunting I have always planned on leaving it alone ..I like the 2-7 I have now.
However in off season I need a secondary scope for weekend paper punching with more magnification to be competitive with the guys I shoot with. (as I said in opening post rule  is you must use your Deer rifle  100-500yards and my 2-7 just does not cut it at longer yardages)

I think I have ruled the weaver out. I know chucky52 was not impressed with the Burris Timberline but since it's only use would be punching paper I may still order.

BURRIS Timberline™ Riflescope $199.00
4.5X-14X-32mm AO
Reticle Ballistic Plex
FOV 17@4.5 6.3@14x
Exit Pupil, 7.1 Low-2.3 High
Eye Relief, 3.75-5
Weight, oz. 15.0
Length, in. 11.3

Another Elite is also in contention but $$ are hard to swing (just for use as just a weekend paper punching scope) and scope length is a factor with the mod seven.

Bushnell Elite 3200 $304.00
4-12x40mm AO
Reticle   DOA 600 Multi-X
FOV, 26.9/9@4x  9.3@12x
Exit Pupil,10-3.33
Eye Relief,3.3 83
Weight, oz. 15
Length, in. 13.2

scootrd,

For your intended use as well as hunting if wanted, I also would suggest looking into the Leupold 3x9 Compact, or the Leupold 3-9x33 VX-II Ultralight Riflescope. With a little looking, they can be had for only a little more than you specified in your OP, and I believe that you would be well served with both the added magnification as well as the looks on your rifle.

I understand your quest as I have a Ruger Compact in .308 which sports one of the Burris Electro Dot 1.5 x 6 and it makes for a great looking and shooting little package. Shots out to 300 are tough on a small paper bull, but anything wearing a fur coat has been easy pickings.

Good luck.

I ordered the Burris Timberline and another set of Lever Lok rings , Hard to beat the price for a scope that is only going to be pulling weekend duty punching paper,  and for the Remmy mod 7 the scopes compact size is the same as my elite 3200 2-7x32. Also, I read approx 10 customer reviews on other sites and they gave this little scope high marks. Will write a full review after I wring it out.

But come deer season the Elite goes back on  ;D

Sadly you paid about $75 to $80 more for that scope than you'd have paid for the Mueller I suggested to you, got no more magnification and lesser quality and questionable customer support if/when needed. But then it's your money to spend as you wish.

Greybeard ,
I didn't ignore your suggestion , I do disagree with your assessment the Burris scope is of lesser quality than Mueller scope in this price point. I researched the Mueller as you suggested. For me, The hurdle with the Mueller is:

Length  almost 3 inches longer than Burris.  -  Burris Timberline was made with Short actions in mind and mount low. The Timberline series is the new replacements for their Burris short mag series scopes.
Mueller weight is a few oz. more than Burris  -no big deal either way
Burris eye relief is better than Meuller.  - This is a big Deal
Mueller Field of View is better than Burris  - For a paper punching scope not really a factor
Both scopes offer fully multi coated lenses
Mueller only offers limited lifetime warranty (warranty Period).  - Burris is backed by their forever warranty.
As to your comment regarding Burris Customer support being questionable ;
I have never delt with them , so I have no basis to comment whether service is good or bad and hopefully I'll never have to find out either way.

Additionally the multiple reviews I read on the Mueller stated:
"good for rimfire but would probably not mount on heavier caliber" or "Power ring turned too hard" or "occular has fair amount of wobble"

The multiple reviews for Burris stated:
"if I could give this 7 stars I would" or "optics clear and sharp" or "great eye relief" or "I like the first Timberline that I ordered so much, that I ordered another one" or "Edge to edge clarity is superb"

So in my Judgment the Burris was the better choice for the small mod 7. Of course , We will see if I still feel that way after I  use it.
I'll let ya know. I will tell ya I was happy to read all the positive customer reviews from actual buyers praising the quality
of this Timberline scope.
