Scope Shim Material
« on: May 06, 2009, 04:09:19 AM »
Thinking about cutting brass from a round;but, first thought I would ask the question: what's the best material for a scope shim?

What part are you wanting to shim?  Larry

It's a Weaver style mount so I'm thinkin the shim will best go under the Weaver base and above the barrel/receiver. Brass being softer than gun metal, I don't want any scratchesl or damage.

Both Brownell's and Midway stock shims designed for the purpose.
I have also used the aluminum from soda cans to shim scopes.
Have you swapped the rings to see if there is any difference in point of impact?

Matt, your idea about swapping rings is simple yet elegant. I'll give that a try first.

Brass sure expands and contracts alot with heat and cold.  I wouldn't use it.  Stay with aluminum, or buy a pack of shims from brownells or midway, which are made for this specific use.

I normally use stainless steel shim stock.

Have you checked for shim stock at your local hardware store?  Ace carries it here, and I've always used brass as it conforms and takes shape easily.

Brass cases don't work well as shim stock, the material is tapered in thickness, back to front..
