more smoke with cast bullets
« on: May 18, 2009, 02:00:50 PM »
I originally posted this question in the 1911/.45 auto forum, but I only got one response.  I just recently started handloading with cast bullets for my 1911, and I've noticed these loads smoke a bit more than my standard copper jacketed loads.  I'm using the same powder in both loads (win 231) and the same weight bullet.  The only difference is that I'm using a little more powder in the cast loads.  Does anyone know what might be causing the smoke and wether or not it's something I should expect with cast bullets.

Cast bullets are generally lubricated.  Burning lube smokes a little - more or less depending on the lube.

That's the response that I got in the other forum.  I guess burning lube seemed too simple to be the case.  I'm totally new to cast bullets, so I'll be the one asking a bunch of silly questions.  That being said, what lube seems to work the best for you guys?

Pretty much the only lubes I use are RCBS Green and Veral Smith of LBT soft blue lube.

+1 for White Lable Lube's!
I like the Lyman Molylube but it is messy and expensive (comparatively) but it did take care of the only leading problem I've had.

For high velocity loads, I go with the Lyman Moly but for everyday plinking, I'm a fan of Lee Liquid Alox.  In the case of the original post though, I think the poster is confined to the lube the manufacturer used.
