Freedom Arms Single-Shot Handgun Update
« on: February 23, 2009, 08:43:49 AM »
FA is making good headway with their single-shot pistol.
The extraction issues with rimless cartridges have been resolved which great, as it allows this handgun to be more versatile cartridge wise.
Planned barrel lengths will be 10” and 15”.
Longer barrels will be possible but will be a custom order.
Bases will be the Lovell and the T-SOB.
Planned cartridges:
223
6.5x55 Swede
7BR
7mm-08
308 Winchester
338 Federal
357 Magnum
357 Maximum
Possibility of the 454 Casull and the 224-32FA as well.
Likely, more cartridges will be slowly added to the line once production gets rolling.

Bob hopes to have the handgun available by mid-year.

Any thoughts on pricing yet?
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

Just looked in on a video showcasing the FA SS.
Looks to be FA brought in all of the most popular single shot functions in one firearm?
The MOA grip
The top action lock of Merrill
The hammer of US arms
The easy change of calibers of Thompson Center or will they have to be custom fitted like Rock Pistols :-\
Mechanical Rock Pistol case ejector......hope they stay with rimmed case's or make sure the the ejector is at least 1/2 moon so as to apply enough surface area for long lasting functionality?
Wonder how heavy/light the final offering is gonna be?
Can't imagine the cost will be anything less than their field grade models?
Well in the end...would make a nice addition to my single shot collection ;)

Just spent a very pleasant week shooting, and watching others shoot, the 2008 Single Shot.  I am still healing up from a tendon injury and mostly shot the 223 barrel at about 500 yards ... what a gun! ... while Kelly Brost and Bob Baker spent a great deal of time tinkering with the 6.5 Swede barrel, doping and zeroing in prep for the 1000 yard shoot at Sundance this weekend.

The gun is coming along.  Its aesthetics have been improved with the addition of a more sculpted forearm.  Ken O'Neill was there ... I think he will agree that this remains a very interesting firearm!

He talked to Bob more about production dates than I did, I think, but I am planning to buy one for my Christmas present.  It may be a while yet before we see it with a rifle stock as well, but again - this is one IMPRESSIVE firearm, as it stands right now.

I like the gun. I shot it with the 6.5x55 barrel @ 550 and 1000 yards. It does indeed share features with the other handguns mentioned above. At this point the individual barrels will have to be fitted at the factory, like the RPM barrels were. The grip is extremely comfortable, like a Mdl. 83.
I have been very heavily committed and involved with Contenders and XP's for many (31) years with the occasional Encore, RPM, and Savage thrown in. You could say my cup runneth over. This FA 2008 is interesting enough though, that I plan to add one as a serious hunting gun. Caliber and barrel length yet to be determined. The long action makes this a long gun, when compared to a Contender, though, so barrel length and caliber are something I'll give a lot of consideration to.

Completely off-topic, the FA .224/.327 Mdl. 97 is FABULOUS !!! It's next on the acquisition list. Accuracy @ 100 and 200 meters, even in 25-35 mph winds makes it a 200 meter rockchuck / groundhog and a 150 meter prairie dog revolver. Maybe better than that.

I'm very interested in these and sent an inquiry to FA but have never heard back from them. Thanks for posting the current info I guess I'll keep track of things here.
