Finally, the first squirrel of the year!
« on: September 13, 2003, 04:51:53 AM »
I finally got an hour this morning to head out squirrel hunting, the wife and 4 month old were sleeping, otherwise I don't get much time for hunting.  Got into the hardwood stand at about 7, shot the first and only squirrel at about 7:10, a nice red fox doe.  I saw one other one, a nice gray, which I have never shot before, so I was disappointed I didn't get it, but maybe I'll get him this evening.  I heard several others barking at me, but I never saw them, very thick stand of hardwoods and poor light this morning, lots of cloud cover.  It's the first I've taken with my great-grandpa's Steven's 44 1/2 target rifle.  Snuck up on one whitetail, spooked a few others, could have easily filled a tag with my pistol had it been the season, but alas, all I could do was enjoy seeing them. :)  It was a great morning to be out, I can't wait to go again.

PS  I did forget how darn tough the little buggers were to skin though!

Where I live it is mostly Black Walnut trees, and I have ONE English Walnut tree and I am fond of the nuts, So are the sqirrels.  These little buggers are hard to keep up with with a pellet rifle, so I finally developed what I cal the Urban Critter Gitter.  A .410 with 3.0 grs of Red Dot.  It just sounds like a Pop gun, and dosent disturb the neighbors or their horse so much.  But the sqirrels certainly got the message.  I got two of them with the 410, and have seen very few since.  I think the noise from the 410 scares them and the pellet rifle dosent.
....make it count

Looking forward to winter break

Boy you guys are making me jealous.  I usually do most of my squirrel hunting over winter break from college with a buddy of mine and haven't been able to get out yet.  I'm really looking forward to this year though.  My girlfriend is taking her hunter education course at the end of October and the three of us should be able to give those squirrels a real run fer their money.  I'll just have to be patient till then...
