Any places in Ohio for boar hunting?
« on: December 02, 2008, 07:17:27 AM »
I'm an Ohio whitetail hunter and I'm interested in trying hog/boar hunting.  Any "valid" locations in Ohio or maybe the tri-state area?

I live in Ohio also.  (NW)  I here down around the river (SW). Vinton county, Shawnee Forest and Ross county.  A guy at work shot one,  while deer hunting around Athens.  Zaleski forest  not for sure of the spelling.   I'm hooked on hogs myself.. I went to DD Ranch and shot one for the first time :)  Had a great time.  Up here in NW Ohio, dont see any hogs but the Coyotes and Fox's are showing up really good this year.

I live about 5 miles from zalynski state forest. I've never seen any hogs, but it is the area where I found the hog wallow I mentioned in a post on here. I plan to do a lot of hunting in the area as it has a good deer population as well as lots of turkey's.

Spoke to two ODNR officers a couple of weeks ago. Both allege the hog populations in Ohio are small and very much in pockets here and there. They said they thought the whole idea of hog hunting here is overblown.  There was a neat article in the Dayton Daily News a month ago about a big one shot in one of the national forests in the SE portion of the state, but the officers both thought it was an escapee from a game ranch.

I think local guys are hunting them quietly so that they don't get a bunch of outside hunters coming in. Every once in a great while you see a story like the one I just mentioned. Just my 2 cents.

I am a avid deer/turkey hunter living near Steubenville, OH (about 40 miles West of Pittsburgh, PA).  I have been on a few game ranch hog hunts and and they are a blast.  I would like to echo what Joe said in his previous post, in that I spoke with my local DNR Officer and he says the hogs in Ohio are few and far between.  I have even posted my desire to help farmers remove hogs from their land on Craigslist and no repsonse.  I think those that are aware of the hogs are keeping that information close to the vest.  I have a turn key hunting parcel, complete with a cabin, feeder, food plot and stands and offer hunts on Ebay.... I would love to have some hog hunting to offer my guests.  I suppose this is still a few years out, the hogs are migrating this way, they just are no here (in force) yet.  I even read a discussion of folks ponedering if they should release pigs to get a wild started.
