YESTEDAYS RAMBLE
« on: May 06, 2009, 03:47:07 PM »
A buddy of mine and I went on a ramble/day trip to South Louisiana yesterday.
The destination was La Grande Isle--or Grand Isle, deep below Houma down highway 1.
I grew up in Texas but spent some time in Louisiana I have always had a fondness for the bayous---and yes, the food.
It has been 40 years since my last venture to Grand Isle, and a major but not unexpected, shock.
years ago the road too Grand Isle ended from pavement somewhere around Golden Meadow. You really need an atlas to look at when reading this little travelogue. It is typical Louisiana Swamp from Houma too about Golden Meadow, where the country breaks out into marsh and bays.
Boys and Gals this is truely the last stop--it all ends here.
The roads then were typically sand, being very considerat to stay on the sand.
the bays are shallow.
Habitation, in those days, was mostly typical cypress homes until the coastal planes when they became homes on stilts/pilings.
this area is scarce than 3 feet above sea level the other is hi land masses, about 5 feet above sea level.
Boys it has changed. there are some fine cottages and homes down there now. the major industry of shrimping, fishing, gas and oil is the same----but there is much more of all now--inclusding the homes.
It is a gergous, place if you want nothing. The views are spectacular and fishing great. If you want to spend a week in shorts/T's/sandals or flip flops, this is a spot i can reccommend.
If you need excitement, shows, tours and tall surroundings you will be greatly dissapointed.
Gettin there is a great deal of the fun---it is adventure and some fine little towns along the way.
If you live within a days drive and have never been there---then don't go, the locals like it laid back. If you want too put away the diet books and hang out this is THE place to GO.
Let the Good times roll and there is no better place to learn to really say that than down here.
Blessings

Road trips are fun and those little day trips are perhaps the most fun.
Don't expect anything but seeing different places and, most often, you will be greatly rewarded.
Grand Isle is the next thing to being on an island.

I do these things about every 3/4 months, mostly to S Louisiana. The next will be in approximately the same location---going to see some dead end roads in the coast area.
Blessings
