Winchester mod12 shotgun
« on: May 03, 2009, 06:03:57 AM »
I recently through a will and estate received a model 12 pump shotgun.
The owner was a banker in Colorado and received it as a gift.
When he died I received it as my part of the will.
It has never been shot and sat in his closet for 50 or more years.
The problem I have is he cleaned it at sometime and there is one spot on the butt stock where the finish has come off (about the size of a half dollar)
Is it possible to redo just that area or must I refinish the complete stock?

I entend to keep it in the unfired condition as long as I live but wanted to fix teh butt stock.
Any advice or help will be appreciated

Have tried it a few times never worked out as well as I wanted it to.  It is just easier for me to refinish the whole stock.

The M12 can be repaired much easier than many modern stocks.. The varnish is patched like the finish on a car.. Spot in the new finish after very light sanding to aid the bonding. After the finish covers the wood sufficiently it can be leveled with very fine sandpaper (220-400). DO NOT sand the wood or stain the wood as matching the rest of the stock can be very difficult and the repair ill always stand out. Always use a block backer when leveling the finish and finish with a light coat of finish on the entore butt stock. I would use TruOil as I'm most familiar with it.. If the luster doesn't match the forearm it can be latered with steel wool and wax or very fine polishing compound..
