Weatherby Vanguard ?
« on: May 05, 2009, 08:12:59 AM »
I am looking for a sporter weight 25/06 wiyh a 24" barrel. I am a dyed-in-the wool SAVAGE fan, however, Savage does not show a 24" sporter weight 25/06 on their web site. Weatherby shows the Vanguard Synthetic 24",25/06 MSRP $399. How about it?

i have had several. they are getting better as they go, they have refined the stock and all have been accurate.

they are much more than you're paying for. every bit as nice as a remington and over $100 less.

for the price i would jump on it and not look back.

Not sure if you are interested but a Marlin Xl7 comes with a 22in barrel, synthetic stock (black or camo), weighs 6.5 lbs, and has a trigger very similiar to the Savage. It cost around $300.00 at Academy, I have a .270 and it is the best bang for the buck rifle I've ever bought! If you want to read about it go to the Marlin Owners forum.

Is that on GBO or somewhere else? I looked here and didn't find it. Thanks, Charlie

In my opinion, a 25-06 needs a 24" barrel rather than a 22".

The Weatherby Vanguard/Howas are nicer than the Savage.  Personally I'd prefer a Remington 700.

The website is Marlinowners.com or if you want to see what it looks like go to marlinfirearms.com. A deer doesn't really care if your barrel is 22"  24" or 26" inches long, hit it where it matters and it's going to die!!!  They also offer their gun in .243 ,25-06, 7mm-08, 308 win and 30-06. They are also adding a .223 in 2010. I've only read one complaint and many praises so they must be pretty decent. One more thing, they are made in the U.S.A!!!

In my humble opinion it is the best rifle I have ever tested in that price range.

I've been looking at 24'' barrels in standard calibers as well and would point out that rugers hawkeye in 25-06 is listed as having a 24 in barrel, but only the 25-06.  I have been debating about going that light.  If they would make their 270, 30-06, or best yet bring back the .280 with the 24" tube, I would have already made up my mind.  The vanguard has gotten several hard looks from me, one piece easily field strippable bolt, and a decently contoured 24" barrel, good rep for accuracy- but made in Japan.  Remington now has several models with 24" barrels in standard calibers as well, but I feel they are a bit overpriced nowadays.  I wonder if I keep holding out if ruger will bump up their .270 barrel also?

Check out Walmart.  That will probably be the cheapest source & they'll order what you want.
