What a difference 50 yrs. makes
« on: May 22, 2009, 03:30:46 PM »

Those of you that grew up in the 50's, like me can relate to this!

Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1959 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2009 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1959 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2009 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged them with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1959 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2009 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1959 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2009 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse.  Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang.  The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself, and their dad goes to prison.  Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1959 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock
2009 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.
1959 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.  He becomes a successful engineer.
2009- Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist.  ACLU files a class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher.  Pedro's English teacher is fired.  English is then banned from the core curriculum.  Pedro is given his diploma anyway, but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1959 - Ants die.
2009 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism.. The FBI investigates his parents -- and all siblings are removed from their home, and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly on airlines again.

Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1959 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2009 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison.  Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

I remember sitting in either chemistry or physics class in high school using my pocket knife to disassemble a shotgun shell for the powder and shot for some project we were going to do. One of the students used a nail and the teacher's paddle while the teacher was out of the room to set off the primer. Kinda loud and sure brought the teacher back fast.

We all survived and no one got into any real trouble over it.

WHEW! We know what would happen to you today.LOL
Friend of mine found a fireworks in his front yard with duct tape around it, and thought it looked suspicious! He then made a big mistake and called the city police, which called the bomb squad from another town and shut down the entire block and evacuated all homes. About 6 hours later he returned home to find a lot of angry neighbors at his house..HA! We use to do the same thing as kids....Made our own firecrackers. Today that might get you a one way ticket to GITMO!

What a difference 30 yrs makes: I remember kids in jr. high bringing their .22's to school so after school they could not get on the bus and take off for the woods.. they were running away and needed the .22's to harvest food.  I will never forget being in the school that afternoon, bus driver says what's up, everyone starts looking around, and the kids are there getting ready to walk the 1-2 miles out of town to the woods they were "escaping" to (just happened to be woods in the farmland of one of the kids)
No cops, no press, just parents coming to pick up the boys.
Now, I'm sure they got in trouble at home for making mom or dad come in, but that's it. I mean, holy smokes, we all had .22's and knew how to use them, and how to use them safely

Now, I've moved back to my hometown (14 yrs away, 7 yrs back) and have 3 kids.  Active dad, all that, school board member, love it, but wow have things changed.  Maybe we're wiser now, or maybe political correctness really has set in. I don't know, but the difference really is noticeable.  We're just a small farming town, so alot hasn't changed, but the days of yesteryear are long gone  :'(

I was raised in a farming community during the 50's and 60's.  During hunting seasons the rule was 1) weapon unloaded, 2) all are to be stored in the principal's office and most importantly 3) no hunting going to class or suspension.  My cousin shot a deer on the way to school, got suspended for the day; the rational was that the deer had to be taken care of.  What a shame our society has become in more ways than one.

When I was a senior in high school I had a fifth of black jack Daniels in my glove compartment of my car for "special occasions" . One day a buddy who rode to school with me went and got it outa the car and brought it into the chemistry lab and made drinks for  a "few friends". Well it seems a girl was seen staggereing down the hall just before lunch and the SHTF. Long story short I was called in to the office and simply asked "Did you bring that whisky into this building?" I said NO since I had not, Case closed as far as I was concerned. Girl got sent home! My buddy got his behind warmed up and sent home(he did get to graduate).  2009 Man my life as I knew it would be over!

I remember my Jr. High gym teacher would always carry a wooden paddle with him. In swim class if you goofed off or disruped class he would make you bend over on the edge of the pool and hit you on the backside with the paddle. Believe me with wet swim trunks on you only needed one taste of this and you didn't goof off again. I also remember our high school Principle would carry his stick up the sleeve of his sport jacket. If he saw someone misbehaving they got five wacks right there in the hall. Then when I got home my father added to it with a leather belt. I believe this type of disipline worked. I think the embarrasment of being paddled in front of everyone was worse then the pain.

I have mixed feelings about corporal punishment in schools. I had my first 8 school years under such a regime and resent it to this day. My wife had similar expierences and still carries emotional scars from some of the treatment she received.

My sister and I had our mother for a teacher in elementary school.  Corporal punishment at school and then at home before mother got home.  Corporal punishment is fine if it is not abuse; every child has different perspectives of what is legitimate punishment and what is abuse.  Parents should be able to recognize that line for each child.  As for me, corporal punishment made me a better person and the last time it was used on me was in the third grade.  I submitted at that time and yet it did not stifle my imagination nor innovativness.

What went down in those years I had in mind would send any teacher to spent years in the Slammer these days, provided he/she was able to leave the school alive.

Everybody was assigned to give a how to speech in class.  The girl’s normally told us how to bake a cake or make a dress.  I was interested in the cake, but sewing was not my thing.  I was never prepared ahead of time, so the last minute, I grabbed Alcan powder, AL-7, #4 shoot, primers, wads, and empty cases  to load 12-guage shotgun shells, and my first generation Lee Loader.

I might have made the teacher a little uneasy, bored the girls, but the guys were okay with it.  I did not get into any kind of trouble for it.

From a weather stand point in Northern California a hunter might never see a snow storm during the season.  Dad made sure that I went to school, as bad as I wanted to hunt the storms.  During the season I would take his pickup to school, with my hunting gear in it, along with my rifle.  As soon as school let out I was headed for mountains.
