71 Mauser Barrel
« on: May 10, 2009, 03:55:37 PM »
I have never thought of it before but reading the survival forum was wondering.
I have several 71 Mauser barrels I bought at a good price ($1.00 each)
Was wondering if one of them could be turned into a caplock rifle?
Where would a guy get info on how to do it?
Would appreciate any info or directions(except the one to go to h%%l.
I mention it as I have gotten it before!!

Get a copy of the dixie catalog. What you want is a combination breechplug with nipple bolster attached. Find out what size the chamber is and you'll have to figure out what size you would need. THEN YOU DECIDE ON WHICH TYPE TRIGGER YOU'LL BE USING either single trigger or double set trigger. Get a jeager type stock and start carving. Basically you'll have a 43-44 caliber rifle that should handle as least 70 grains black powder. Sights I leaveto you as everyone has their own opinions as to what works best for him. Couple other places you can get catalogs is track of the wolf,, and lodgewood if they don't have what you want it isnt available. Hope others chime in and lend some more help. Frank
