. 270 Mauser European Walnut (pics added)
« on: May 06, 2009, 12:44:35 PM »
I bought an Interarms Mauser in .270 Winchester some time back.  The original stock finish was a very high gloss Truoil looking varnish or polyuretane.  When it would get scratched it would turn white and chalky looking.  I stripped it and the grain was really nice so I decided to just use linseed oil on it.  I've been rubbing it in with 0000 steel wool. It looks great.  Is there a wax available in the stores that could be used for the final shine/seal.  I'd rather not order something due to limited funds.

I've started adding a few drops of Truoil to the purified linseed oil, and the sheen is starting to pick up.  The stock looks like Turkish Walnut.

For my final coats, I went to Minwax Tung Oil Finish.  It's looking really good.

It looks as nice as(or better than) the factory finish on my 700CDL.  That's pretty high marks IMO.

Pictures, Pictures, Pictures - Pictures Please! ;) Oh OK, I know you're working on it and you were probably going to post pictures when it's finished anyway. Just didn't want you to forget. ;D

I agree with you guys that some of the Rem products have an excellent factory finish. I'm very satisfied with the finish and the grain on my .35 Whelen CDL.

For my final coats, I went to Minwax Tung Oil Finish.  It's looking really good.

I've used Formby's myself, but having refinished quite a few stocks (I love rescuing beat up rifles as they usually cost less and I enjoy refinishing anyways :)) I've come to really like the Tung Oil finishes.  They're thinner than the Tru Oil (takes me more coats but the results are better IMHO), and Tru Oil seems to have a stain mixed in with it.  Though I stained a few stocks before finishing in the past, the last few I've found that I preferred the natural wood color to just be brought out by the finish.  Particularly true on Maple and Myrtle where the lighter unstained color is part of the appeal of those wood types.

Very nice job Swamper. The Tung Oil sure brought the grain out nicely. Looks beautiful.

nice gun swampman, now you can seal it all up with a silicone based spray, undo the whole stock when spraying it so you can get to the inside aswell. A FINISH THAT WILL LAST FOREVER.

If I put silicone spray on it, I'll never be able to add more finish.

you wont need to , i finished my stock with linseed oil, pledge, bees wax and a local stock oil about 1000 layers over 3 yrs and ended it off with silicone spray and after 3 yrs it still looks perfect if not better , looks like honey with the most beutiful grain pouring through.

If I put silicone spray on it, I'll never be able to add more finish.

Just wax that beauty with a paste wax that lists carnuba as the main ingrediant.. The wax will protect the finish from water better than any oil finish and can be easily renued as needed.. Really good job.

Another vote for Johnson's paste wax.  At Walmart at least, it is on the mop and floor care aisle.  It is for hardwood floors and furniture.  Is the cheapest carnuba wax that you can buy with cleaners or abrasives added to it.  I think that it is $5-6 and I have had same can for 3-4 years now.  I just it on tung oil and BLO finishes on my military rifles.  I also use it on the coffee table that I polyurethaned because the kids are such slobs.

Personally, I wouldn't use silicon spray on a stock either, too slippery.  I like unbuffed wax on mine for protection and grip.

That is a nice stock, Swampman.
