Fishing in Canada
« on: July 12, 2009, 12:05:48 PM »
Has anyone gone or already been to Canada fishing this year ?
I"m leaving next week for Sioux lookout,
I'm trying to get a fishing report for that area.

I've been to Northeast Manitoba every year for a long time.  Usually around the first week in June.

Had another good trip this year.

Did they let you keep that pike, presuming you wanted it?

There is no "they".  It's just our group and a guy in camp that keeps the boats gassed up and running.  It's like an outpost in that we take all our own food and cook for ourselves but the place is a former full service lodge so it can sleep bigger groups, has showers in each cabin, etc...  We usually take between 14-22 people, half women.

You could keep any pike you wanted, but I don't know why you would.  On a slow day you'd catch 20-30 walleye so there's no shortage for shore lunch.  On a good day you could easily catch more than 100 fish.  No doubt in my book that walleye is better than northern.

I wrote up a more complete report here http://skinnymoose.com/dailylimit/2009/06/21/harrop-lake-2009/

With the "They" I meant Provincial Fish& Game Regs which may dictate catch and release on lakes, specie and size. Just like "they" do in the US of A   ;D

The "they" must arrive by float plane, so "they" are unlikely to ever sneak up on you.  But legally I believe you can keep as many northern as you want and 4 walleye per person per day.  It's a "conservation" lake with somewhat unusual restrictions.

It is nice to read that there are places left like that.
I gave up fishing when it came apparent I needed a Surveyor, Lawyer and Marine Biologist in my boat just to make sure my butt would be covered.

It all came in gradual, sneaky wise.
Besides size and specie, you needed to look if it was a wild or nursery fish.
Then came the no treple hooks.
 Then no barbs
Then artificial lures only
Then catch and release only, then etc etc. >:(
