Material For Use In Finding Touch Spots In a Stock
« on: May 08, 2009, 01:52:31 PM »
One of the techniques when floating a stock prior to bedding is to apply a material to the action and barrel, install the action and barrel into the stock and look for transfer of the material to the stock. This is where additional material must be removed from the stock. What is a good material to use for this that applies easily and is not difficult to clean up? I heard of the use of some kind of grease but is there some non greasy material that can be used?

Brownells sells lampblack or you can use lipstick.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

I've used lipstick for many years. It's easy to obtain and free. I just ask, "Honey, you got an old lipstick you don't use anymore?"  ;D

Brownells sells inletting black and gold, works well and cleans very easy.  They also sell prussian blue, I use it a lot more often and I would recomend it the most.  All work best when applied lightly with a brush.

Couldn't you just slide a dollar bill or a few along the barrel.
Real clean and you get to put the money back in your pocket ;)

GameHauler,
A dollar bill or business card works fine on the barrel but the areas between the recoil lug and the rear action screw also need to be floated. Some material to find those high spots is needed. Per the suggestions I did try lipstick and it worked well. I also just ordered some prussian blue since my wife frowns on using her lipsticks. Thanks for the replies.
