In my opinion a good weight bullet for a .308 is a 140 to 150 grain pellet. You don't need mag primers for Varget. Go with the primer the recipe you use calls out.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

it says they like mag. primers for 308's right on the container of powder .
Some say the 150 to 168 gr bullets work best in 30 cal's so that might be normal. maybe !
I tried 110 in a 30-06 years ago and it was ok but found the 125 worked better for me so that's what i use in the 308 also . The reason was i used it on ground hogs and deer . The 110 was light for deer it seemed as the bullet would come apart . the 125 worked very well . Note our deer are not really big , a doe 90-120 lbs and a good buck 125-150 maybe a few 160-180 but not many that big .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

The Sierra 110 HP will work OK with Varget.  If you get the smaller 110 HPs that are made for the 30 carbine or 30 caliber pistols, they will come appart on you.  There might be other bullets out there that will work, but I have not tried them personnally.

I have used mag primers in my 7mm Mag and 338 Win Mag.  Never needed them in any of my other rifle calibers and I am only missing a few between 22 hornet and 338.

I once took a rock chuck at 440 yards with a Savage 340 in .30-30.  That little gun liked the Speer 110 HP and a dose of Reloader 7.  First shot I held high and shot over it.  Next shot I aimed at it and hit a little low.  Last shot was top of back and nailed him dead center.  My buddy and I counted the railroad joints from where I was shooting to where the chuck had been laying on the rock.  Confirmed with my dad (track inspector for the railroad) that it was indeed 440 yards.

Those light bullets will shoot in some of the heavier calibers if you find the right load.

Good luck,

Steve :)

If you've a 12" twist .308W then the 110s will work pretty well.  If a 10" twist then , like the guy mentioned about his '06, the 125/130s will work better.  As to Varget; it is a bit too slow buringing as you will have problems getting enough in the case to do well with the 110s.  H4895, H335, H322 or AA2230 will all give higher velocities and mostoften better accuracy in the .308W with the 130 gr or lighter weight bullets.  Magnum primers are not necessary with Varget or H4895 however with the ball powders a magnum primer or the Winchester WLR are best.

When my Brotherinlaw gave me my 788 in 308, he gave me the lists of loads he'd worked up over the years. At the top of the list was a 110gr HP load. He and his Dad had used it for groundhogs on up! I think he was using IMR3031 with them. I've loaded that same load, just playing and have found it to be quite accurate. While I've not tried them on a deer, I prefer a heavier bullet for deer hunting. Most of the deer I've killed with a 308 have been shot with a 150gr SP.

As for the Mag primers...I've not used or felt the need for them in this rifle. I don't remember seeing any listings for their use, in any of my loading books.
