hammer/scope closeness with Talley mount????
« on: May 12, 2009, 10:34:03 AM »
I have the Whitetail Unlimited HR version in 45-70, mounted a 1.75 x 5 pentax gameseeker in Talley one piece mount.  There is a fraction of an inch clearence between the scope and the hammer.  I'm concerned about this, has anyone filed the hammer down or should I return the Talley mounts.

I also have the 12 ga. Turkey/camo and love these guns.

There's a method to see if the hammers hitting your scope.  I can't remember it now but check the faq sticky.  If it's not there I'm sure one of the experts will chime in here any moment.

If they haven't already done so by the time I hit the post button :D

Thx, I read the posts on heating and cutting the hammer.  My new question is this, "If there is a small space between the scope and the hammer, will it be OK?'

Welcome!! Yes...... unless the scope moves.  :'( It's easy to removed the tip of the hammer spur above the extension, a file or dremel works fine to add a little clearance, then use a little cold blue to touch it up, I've done dozens of them that way.  ;)

There is one condition that can cause the hammer to get closer to the scope, if the barrel seats deeper in the frame as things wear, the scope could possibly be by hit the hammer if it's really close as in just a few thousandths, but if there's .030" or more clearance, I don't see that happening unless there's some debris on the barrel/frame that is removed through cleaning. Painting a barrel and frame has been known to prevent the action from locking up well, so it could go the other way too.  ???
