Bullet Choice, 375 JDJ
« on: July 19, 2009, 06:52:11 AM »
Anyone care to give their recommendation on bullet choice for a 14"
Contender chambered in 375 JDJ?
It will be used for Black Bear and maybe Elk.
Also perhaps your choice powder.
Really looking to see if anyone has tried Trailboss in one.

Thanks
Mike

A good cast bullet will suit your needs very well. If looking for a jacketed flavor.. the Speer 235 semi spitzer is a favorite as well....

You'll probably get more responses on the TC Handgun Forum. I think the Hornady 220 is considered the standard go to bullet for it tho.

Mike,

A controlled expansion bullet (GC2) would be a good choice for most of your Black Bear there, but since you might stumble into a trophy class bear, I'd go with a bullet designed for a delayed expansion for deeper penetration in the 260-300 grain range (GC3).   Something like a Speer Grand Slam, Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame, etc.

Actually the same bullet class would be a good choice for elk too, so that would keep it simple for you.

I'll PM you on the powder.

Larry

FWIW, my go-to for my 375JDJ's was the Hornady 270 Spire Point.   With it I was good to go from prairie dogs to elk.
