Turkey story
« on: May 19, 2009, 05:39:41 AM »
There was a hen turkey on the highway with cars zooming around her to the point I think it was disoriented and would sort of squat when another vehicle went past her.  I pulled over, directed another car to the other lane around it, and started purring softly to it as I walked up behind her.  Not knowing what to do, I slowly reached down and picked her up holding the wings tight against her body.  I walked across the highway and tossed her in the air toward the swamp on that side.  The big hen took off flying and went on into the woods.  I felt really good about saving future toms to hunt.

Now for the rest of the story: my wife was in the car and saw the whole thing.  When I got back in the car to continue, she asked, "If it's that easy why do you always need new camo and another two or three calls for turkey season?"

Almost shot myself in the foot!!   :D

Ha!!! Great story. I'm gonna add to your's my own. Here it is:

Your not gonna believe this story. But I at least had enough sense to take a few pics with my cell phone to back up this non-sense. I can't believe what the "Turkey Gods" did to me today. I'm still shaking my head.

I was tired but I figured I'd sneak down over the hill and do some callin locally. It's a small area, but there is a pretty good size flock of birds there. So, I called there for about an hour and got 2 hens to come in. No boyfriends.

Well, I got back in my truck and was going home. I was going the back way....down this gravel road when I was passing the first house on my right......there in the front yard stood 4 (Yes FOUR) longbeards. So, I naturally just hit the brakes too stop and look.....as this was in the guys front yard and I don't know these people.

Well, as soon as I stopped and began to roll down my truck windows, all four birds began to run around the back of my truck. Two of 'em just ran into the grass off of the drivers side.....but the other two came right up to my drivers window! (GOT THAT!! RIGHT UP TO MY DRIVERS WINDOW. THE ONE STUCK HIS NOSE ON MY WINDOW RUBBER!!!) They were both looking right at me. I said something like "Hey boys....whats going on here?" and neither one backed away. I was astonished!! Here I am trying my best to eat one of these guys, and they are doing their best to climb into my truck.

So....I thought.....I'll see what they do if I give a few clucks on my suction call.....then I thought....no one (YEAH....NO ONE) is going to believe this story. I mean...would I believe it if say......huntin buddy "X" would tell me this happen to him? I'd be askin what brand of wine he was brewin and how much had he tasted that morning. Wouldn't you? So, I grabbed my cell phone and clicked the three pics below.

When I hit the high note on the caller all four of those gobblers went off!!! Man.....that valley was just hummin with gobblin!!! So.....the 2 at the truck then got bored and decided to move on (see the last pick...you can see all 4 and the side of my truck). So, I called a buddy on my cell to "share" this turkey incident with him. I attempted to get the gobblers to sound off again.....but no such luck. That was it....they would do no more.

THEN...this young girl who lived in the house (well...young to me...I'd say in her mid 20's) came down to get the mail. I told her I had been hunting these turkey birds for 4 days now. And......she said "Well.....why didn't you just shoot one of those?" (Why don't I just stab my eye with a fork?) I said really? She said "Yup" or something of the sort. Well....by then the gobblers were 50 to 75 yards up the hill. And since I'm disabled (and have a shoot from the vehicle permit) I don't do hills very well. Darn, darn, darn, darn. So...there I was. I now had permission, pulled off the road, had the gun in the back, license, permit on the visor.

I was lookin at the son-of-a-gun eyeball to eyeball. I still can't believe it. Here are the pics:

Wow both are great stories.

I wonder if anyone fed those two toms from a vehicle before?  Either that or it was just one of those moments.

Chipmunk,

Yeah....that's exactly what I was thinking. In this particular area, there are patches of woods along with clusters of houses and then old farms....or what is left of farms. I'm certain that after watching what those two birds did, they were very comfortable with running right up to my truck looking for food. So, someone or "someone's" have been feeding these birds from their vehicles since these birds were poults.

Nice looking birds, but one of these days that type of behaviour is gonna end up with them in the oven and the corn feeder\truck tree huggers wondering where their little turkey bird went to.

Well, keep feedin 'em if he makes it thru the season. Feed 'em all winter and keep 'em fat. I like 'em with a lot of meat!!!

funny stuff.

I had broke a bag of corn in my pickup that got  wet. About 2 weeks before the fall turkey season, the birds I had been seeing around my house made out the few kernels in the truck. Great surprise to go to work and find 6 birds in, on and under the truck.

A good friend of mine says you can train any animal to do anything for food. After that turkey experience, I think he's right.
