water pump weep hole
« on: May 09, 2009, 10:18:25 AM »
I have never understood what this is for.
my 70 Nova was leaking a bit, I thought it was the lower hose cracked, couldn't find any cracks but I changed it anyway.  still leaked a little bit when I saw and realized it was the "weep hole"

the other day it finally let go.  flowing out unresisted as fast as I could pour in the radiator. starting the motor slowed it down so I filled the radiator and drove it home.
just changed out the water pump.  (gotta love small block chevy  EASY to change water pump)

anyway what the heck is that weep hole all about?  I been wrenchin all my life building and swappin motors and trannys and stuff and do not understand what its purpose is....sometimes it can drip but the pump is okay?

 ???

It's supposed to be an indicator you are going to have a problem. It could happen tommorrow or next year but if it starts leaking out of the weep hole it's time to replace the pump before you are stranded or it causes more serious problems.

That's how it was explained to me anyway.

I've wondered the same thing, but I do know that anytime it started to weep I guess you'd say, wasn't long till I was changing the pump. :o

That's it's purpose, when the bushing on the shaft gets worn it starts leaking out the weep hole.  Change the pump before your out in the boonies and it goes out.  it could be a long walk to the nearest place to get a replacement, and changing it in the boonies is near impossiable sometimes.  Especially if you are out of reach of a wrecker.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
