460 Weatherby Handloads for Wimps
« on: April 26, 2009, 01:57:44 PM »
Hi, I have been playing with some loads that I am shooting in a 17 inch bull barrel un braked Virgin Valley Encore thought some of you might be intersted in know my hand cannon is capable of shooting one inch or less with all these loads...sandbagged at 100 yards.
Bullets are 405 grain 458 jacketed.  Primers are 215 Federals.
# 1  load is 32.0 of XMP 5744  great gentle target load.
# 2  51.0 of XMP 5744  kicks but not hard and still accurate
# 3  59.0 of XMP 5744 Thumps but tolerable
# 4  63.0 of IMR  3031 Good
#5   73.0 of IMR  3031 Barely tolerable
# 6  85.0 of IMR  3031 A thumper but doable.... it bruised and a lmake a tiny split in my
forefinger after five rounds so I quit for the day.  But I had already fired 40 rounds of the above....<vbg>

Okay, the handgun may be "capable" of doing it - but have you have personally shot 5-shot groups of less than one-inch at 100 yards will all those loads?  That's hard to believe given the huge velocity variation you must have with the low loading density of the light IMR3031 loads.  I'll not say you didn't do it - but like I said, hard to believe based on my own experience with large overbore cartridges in handguns.  And 405-grain bullets are not known for their sub-moa accuracy potential...but I'm glad you're having fun with the barrel, it sounds like a hoot - for you.   ;)

it would be almost worth a trip to come watch you shoot a box of factory 460s out of it without a break!!! I shot kelly brost 458 lott out of an encore with a break and it was eye watering!!

Should be fairly effective on groundhogs and such!

Lone Star, Tom, et al
I said my barrel was capable of shooting 1 inch groups with the variety of powders I used.  What I did not say is every time I changed amounts of powder I had to resight in my scope.  Obviously a light load of 3031 hits differently than a heavy load.  As for shooting a full box of factory 460's I never claimed to have shot them.  I don't think I could shoot more than one ot two before calling it quits.  It is fun to shoot with light loads hence the title.

Are you saying that an Encore action can handle a full throttle factory 460 Wby load?

I'm having trouble believing this one. If it can, I want to watch. (from a safe distance)  ;D
