Handgun availability
« on: May 30, 2009, 09:31:30 AM »
WOW, I had not realized how scarce handguns have become. I knew there was a shortage of ammo and primers but since I haven't been in the market for a new gun I didn't realize how scarce they have become until a friend asked me to find a small .380 ACP. I checked with all my regular wholesale distributors for a Ruger LCP or a Kel-Tec .380  and came up with zero!
Just for the heck of it I searched for Taurus revolvers on Jerry's Sports Center site and out of 104 different Taurus Revolvers they normally carry they had just 16 in stock! Those were mostly at the two extremes, either .22 rimfire or .44 Mag.

Not surprised about the P3AT and LCP. Kel Tec has had a hard time keeping up with demand every since the introduction of the P3AT. The LCP was even harder to find than the KT,-------and that was before the coronation of BHO!

I was talking with the owner of a small shooting supplier in town.  He has a good selection and usually keeps a few KelTec's and others on hand as well as AR's and hunting rifles.  He's also a good source of archery supplies. Keep in mind, where we live there are probably 20K residents in a four county area.

He made the following statement;  "In the last 7 months he has sold more guns than I have in the past 2 years.  Americans have ever been more armed or stocked up as they are today.  All the current political climate has done is create a situation where we have armed our selves to the teeth.  I know people who have thousands and in some cases tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition stored and guns that they can use and guns to lend to those who may need one, 'just in case'"

If you're talking about Davidsons then yeah, they've gotten pretty scarce.  I had a stockwatch on the 4.5" barrel Ruger 22/45's and last week they got some in according to the email I received, but by the time I checked 45 minutes later they were all gone again.

Stuff is still showing up on Gunbroker though, and the local gun show that I attended this Saturday still had a pretty decent supply on hand - of guns anyways. I know I saw the Ruger LCP, and quite a few Kel-Tecs (S&W's polymer auto seemed to be the most common new gun on sale though - going price anywhere from $368 to $425 with your choice of 9mm or .40S&W was what I saw).  Ammo was outrageous and primers weren't even present, for any price (well, there were some shotgun primers, but no pistol/rifle).

.380 was anywhere from $35 to $50 per box of 50.  The only dealer with 7.62 Nagant wanted $47 per box of 50.  The CHEAPEST I could find any .45ACP was one single dealer who had a box of S&B left for $18.  I bought that one.  Everybody else wanted at least $25 per box for those. They were also seemingly digging DEEP in their boxes for whatever ammo they could find.  I never saw so many boxes of downright old ammo before that people were snatching up.  Even saw partial boxes taped up being sold at inflated prices.

I am starting to see more guns locally in shops for sale. Ammo is still a problem, but more new guns are on the shelves in the last 5 weeks, than I have seen in the last 5 months. I was in an Academy Sports last week, and they had lots of handguns on the shelf. 5 weeks before I was looking for a 9mm, and they had four pistols total in stock. Also right down the road, a place that was special ordering black rifles, had an ad in the paper for about 8 different types with 20+ in stock. When I bought my 9mm from this place last month, they were turning people away claiming they couldn't get them until July or later.

My local gun shops are telling me things are slowing down a bit on gun sales. They also have a good supply of guns, but there are  few that are on back order. The Kal-Tec P3AT and LCP, and the Sig Mosquito.

Jerry's Sport Center is the largest wholesale distributor of sporting goods in the U.S., they have six distribution points all accessed from one website. They are the source from which many small retailers get their guns and ammo. A search for about any handgun you can think of will come up "not available" over and over down the list. They have a few "oddballs" but for the most part they are sold out. I know this will pass but things are still very tight.

Obama has to be the gun salesman of the century if not all time!

One of my shooting partners, who also works as a freelance engineer in gun devopment once called Clinton the best gun salesman.  I wonder if Obama will beat him for the king of all time?
