Uberti Stallion 38 Sp.
« on: March 31, 2009, 04:11:39 PM »
Hi,

Not sure if this belongs here or in the reloading section,

Just picked up a new revolver for fun and trail use.  In going through the various data sources I am finding a wide variety in basic loadings for the very old 38 special ctg.  I sent an e-mail to Uberti and was told that the Stallion model is not rated for +P ammo and thus I want to keep thing to a reasonable level.  I have been loading 5gr unique under most everything except when I use 158gr lead then I drop back to 4.5gr.   Some of the newer books are quoting lower pressure levels and lower powder charges.  I have been using Speers number 11 manual for years and it lists a pressure level of 18,900 CUP for standard loads and 22,400 CUP for +P levels.

What gives here, I am just a little frustrated.

The Uberti is a sweet little carry piece that has the same basic frame size of Rugers single six models.  I hope this is a spur to Ruger to make a similar model and perhaps to bring back the 32mag version.  Perhaps Uberti will make a 32mag version as well.

I will try to post pics when I can get my computer to behave properly.

I have been eyeing one of them for some time now and someday will get one.  As of now I envy you.

Congratulations on a fine little woods walk'in gun!  I would shoot the 4.5 gr loads for all around shooting but carry the 5. gr when in the woods.  I really believe that you could shoot the 5 gr load all the time and not hurt that gun.  I shot thousands of even heavier loads through a little charter for years with no problems at all.  If you are using a fairly hard cast swc bullet, it will do the job on whatever you wish to shoot with either load.  44 Man.

The Alliant website lists 4.7 grains of Unique under a 158 grain speer bullet.  It says that generates a velocity of 815 fps.  It also lists 5.2 grains as being a +p charge with a velocity of 919 fps.  What I don't know from the Alliant site is whether the listed loads are starting, maximum or suggested. I don't know what to say about your 4.5 grain and 5.0 grain charges. There doesn't seem to be much leaway between a standard load and a +p load.  I knew there was a reason I didn't depend on Alliant recipes. The website is cryptic at best.

Hi,

Well I finally was able to get my camera somewhat working and I hope that you can see these.

The Uberti is about the same size of the Single-six and yet holds a full 6 rounds of 38 special.  It does have a frame mounted firing pin but does not have a transfer bar. Instead It incorporates a second notch on the base pin so when it is set back to the rear most position, it is supposed to hold back the hammer from the bottom notch on the hammer in case it gets a good hit...  Sorry,  Its not a ruger so I only load 5.

I decided to include my ruger Vaquero for size comparison. Both have 5 1/2 bbl case finish.

Dimensional differences Ruger is the larger one. Dimensions in inches.
Cylinder dia, 1.435 vs 1.730
  Length    1.520 vs 1.710
bbl dia at root.  .667 vs .787
height of frame forward of trigger guard 1.872 vs 2.225
length of frame pin boss to back 3.135 vs 3.515
Grip is one piece on Uberti and 2 scales on the Ruger.
weight unloaded 1lb 15 3/8oz Uberti vs 2lb 9 1/2oz Ruger

In case you noticed the ejector rod housing on the Uberti is rather short at 2.8" It does give the illusion of a 7.5" 45 colt from a distance, Id rather have another inch to push out the cases.
