Old .45 Huntsman

Saw an unusual gun today. Huntsman, .45, with what looked to be a from-the-factory set-up to use a #11 cap rather than a 209. Is this the way they were made? The barrel WAS NOT drilled and tapped for a scope mount, and the frame said Huntsman.
This gun any good?

Thats how they were made.  Some have a push in breach plug and some have a screw in ont.  I have a .58 with the screw in plug and #11 cap.  They are good rifles, you will find it has a large flat fireing pin for the caps.  Larry

Hey tn_junk,
They are a fun guns to shoot.  I have the old style push in breach plug that used a #11 cap.  I did upgrade to a 209 primer nipple from Hubbards just for the conveyance of borrowing primers from my hunting friends.  You may want to also upgrade the ramrod to a Hubbards also.

Dunno' about the later screw-in plugs but as W-Magnet said the push-ins are easily converted to 209 just by getting a 209 holder from Hubbard's.

The push-in can easily be converted to musket cap also if you want to hunt with it and live in a state that frowns on 209's. Just get one of these nipples for T/C inlines, fits perfectly:

You might want to find out from Hubbard if he has changed the aluminum end piece on his ram rod or if he has one specific for .45 Huntsman as the one I have will not fit all the way down my bbl the end piece that is aluminum is to big but this is probly one of his first ramrods he made.

I decided to pass on this gun. The price ($75) was right, but the lack of drilled/tapped scope mounting holes keeps me from buying it. My old eyes just can't use iron sights anymore.

Alan none of the 70-80's Huntsmans were drilled or tapped from the factory. The .45 is a pretty easy one to do your self though. Kurt

It was pretty close to "tomato stake" condition, or I would have had it. It was so loose, with the action closed, that you could stick a business card, doubled, between the face of the barrel and the action. Wobbled back and forth at least .030. Cracked stock. Didn't look like it had been cleaned or oiled in decades. Offered the guy $50 for it, but he said he had to have $75. I am going to have my booth set up pretty close to his next weekend, so maybe we can do some dickering.

A few years ago, I grabbed a push-in breechplug, #11 nipple, .45 Huntsman as a first BP deer gun for my Grandson for $75.

I threw a T/C 209 conversion/nipple replacement in it, and D/T the top for a Weaver rail to mount a small (1") red dot.

He loves it, and has already taken his first deer with it.

The only troube is that NOW, he wants one in .50 cal.  ;)

He has had soem family problems according to my last conversation with him a week ago.  His Brother is quite ill and he has been pretty much shut down.  He is back in small amounts of production again.  I am waiting for a ramrod I ordered a while ago.  It will be on the way soon.  I have been emailing him and getting quick responses.

I just received a phone call from Mr. Hubbard.  He stated that he is sending my rod out shortly.  He apologized for the delay and stated he is back up and running now.  So feel free to contact him for questions orders etc.
