Any significant difference to 300 yds betwn a 308 and 25/06?
« on: September 14, 2003, 04:33:02 AM »
Using a bolt action[e.g.Savage FP10 308W vs Ruger 77 25/06] is there any significant difference to 300 yards for mulies, antelope, coyotes?
Already have the FP10-and it's capable of subminute accuracy with 165gr boattails.Toying with getting a 25/06.
Thanks

hans g./UpS,

If your not saving hides from your coyotes the seeing that you already have the .308 and shoot it quit well, then I would go with the .308.  Now if you're looking for a reason to buy another rifle then the .25-06 is the better choice for mulies, antelope and coyotes.  I believe the .25-06 was designed for just this type of shooting.  Of course this is coming from a fan of the .25-06.  Lawdog

Lawdog,
In what way is the 25/06 better than the 308 for mulies, antelope?
Does a 22"barrel provide sufficient time for a 25/06,or does the cartridge really need >=24" of barrel for best utilization?
Thanks.

hans g./UpS,

First all three of my .25-06's have 26" barrels, two were ordered that way.  They shoot somewhat flatter than a .308 Win. even with 150 gr. loads.  A 100 grain .257 bullet traveling at 3500 fps. seems to depart a lot of shock to deer/antelope size animals.  Mule deer are the largest of the deer family(excluding the moose) and on them I move up to 115 grain bullets(Nosler Partitions in any weight) due to the size difference(80 lbs. compared to 300 plus lbs.).  I just prefer the flatter shooting .25-06 for these animals.  Lawdog

The 308 is a great sniper round - very accurate and it will reach out a long distance.  Snipers are trained to judge distance and now they have available equipment to inform them of the distance before they shoot.  Unless you have the equipment, or can judge distance extremely well, the 25-06 (a flatter shooting round) is the best round for - out there -shooting.  Because you are not waltzing through the trees, a 26 inch barrel - better for bullet speed - is not a hinderence.  If you want pelts, get a 223WSSM in a Winchester Coyote and use fmj.
