Cap and ball revolver nipples
« on: June 03, 2009, 01:01:25 AM »
I have recently been shooting  a replica Rem New Army and Colt 1860 because they are alot cheaper to shoot than cartridge guns. I have found they are both capable of accuracy on par with my cartridge guns. What I do have issues with is the nipple / cap fit. The rem has nipples that are too small and I have to pincht he caps to get them tight. The Colt had nipples that were to big and I had to turn thenm down to fit. none of these are really satisfactory fixes. Where can I get some really good nipples that will properly fit no11 caps? I don't mean which retailer, but what company makes the best product?

Ampco or Tresco are the best, available online from "Track of the Wolf". I don't know why the Italian makers can't get it right but it seems they just cannot. I had to buy #10 caps for some of my guns while others required #11 caps and I got fed up with getting to the range only to find the caps didn't fit the gun. I replaced the nipples of all four revolvers with Ampco just so that all would take the more common #11 cap. I think it very important that the caps fit well without pinching of cobbling them up. If you loose a cap the open nipple on a loaded chamber is an invitation to chainfire.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I shoot a 44 Remy capa and ball by Pietta. Using #10 caps. They fit quite snug and work well for me.

ain't it the truth!  They fit a tad too tight for comfort than do the Remington #10's.   But finding the Remington #10's is like a needle in a haystack.   I was determined to get some last year, and had to buy a whole brick of 'em thru the mailorder.  At least I've got a lifetime supply.   Now they're as rare as fine gold.
