Im about as lost as i can get right now...i have been shooting hand cast in my bpcr's and really love em..and im getting good accuracy with them...in part. to the little .50-140...but......i fugure if i dont try something new i mights just fade away from not tryin...now i been bit by a lotta critters in my job and with some kinda big kitty cats.but..this bpcr has got to be the worst thing i have ever been bitten by...cant sleep,all i think about is casting more bullets,doing some voo-doo and witchcraft and mixen lubes t get that magic moa at 20o yards..was gunna cast today but the sind blowing at 40mph and its snowing kinda hard...dont ned any suprises with that hot lead inna pot...i know...but i read it..anna i just gotta doooooo iiiiitttttttttttttttt... :biggun:  :lol:

I also read with interest the Handloader article on PPB's.  There were a couple of things I didn't agree with, but the main one was the direction that the paper is wrapped on the bullet.  If wrapped in the manner described, the patch has a greater chance of unwrapping in the bore instead of just after leaving the muzzle.  In a right hand twist it is my impression that the paper should be wrapped also in a right hand twist not left hand as stated in the article.  I have tried both methods over the years and have much greater accuracy with the right hand-right hand method.  There is also much less paper residue left in the barrel.  I have fired as many as 20 rounds with no cleaning or patching between shots.  Only a consistant use of the blow tube.

Hi Timberlake, sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your inquiry, CHRISTmas shopping ya know.  

I have experimented with paper thicknesses from .0010 to .0030 and found that if I keep the patch to bore dia. and less than grove dia. I am able to shoot that many rounds without running a cleaning patch down the bore.  I am shooting these in a C.Sharps, 45-110, using either a 420 gr or 550 gr bullet cast 28-1 lead -tin, with a cast dia. of .446.  This is backed by 92 grs. of Goex 2fg, a milk carton wad, compressed then to allow the edge of the patch to just contact the lands.   I then use a grease cookie made up of beeswax, vaseline, and just a small amount of olive oil.   Instead of a roll crimp, I just use the sizing die to give a taper crimp and therefore don't damage the patch.  

My blow tube is full length of the chamber so as not to get the chamber wet, and consistantly give 4 good slow blows.  I haven't tried to go beyond 20 rounds without at least one patch, but I expect that I could.  

I tried some .0030 100% cotton paper, but that made the finished patched bullet .4615 dia.  When shooting these, after the first bullet was fired, I noticed difficulty chambering the next round.  I ran a cleaning patch down the barrel, and found a small thin ring of paper had been just at the end of the chamber (or start of the bore).  This dia. did this every time.  There was no effect on accuracy, but the barrel had to have a cotton patch run through it after every shot.  I don't want this when I go to a match, or practice either one.  

Bufffalo Arms in Idaho has the 100% .0010 cotton patch paper.  they advertise it as .0020, but with 4 different micrometers that I have, it always measures .0010.  

The 45-110 is fairly new to me so I am still working up loads for it.  But it seems like it will be accurate when I get done load developement.  

If it is as accurate as either my Pedersoli 1874 sharps or Browning BPCR, both in 45-70, I will be happy.  Merry CHRISTmas, Omaha

King--Your quick kill with paper patched bullets last year was not a fluke.  I hunt with paper patch ammo most of the time.  Paper patched ammo is, well, special, and it adds another dimension to the hunting experience.

I load a pure lead bullet.  I have several molds for both 50 and 45 caliber.  The 50 cal molds throw a bullet .485 in diameter, and my 45 caliber molds give a bullet that is .437 to .442, depending on the particular mold.  I patch them up to BORE diameter, or about .002 over, and adjust the diameter of the bullet by using different thickness paper.  I have had decent luck with any of the bond papers, as long as the diameter of the patched bullet was not too big.  I patch them dry, and stick them in the case.  I do not use any lube on the patch.

There is no problem shooting 30 or 40 shots without wiping.  The trick is to not patch them too big, get a good burn and control the fouling, and seat the bullet so that it just barely kisses the leade in the rifling.  Do this, and you can load and shoot.  Get the vaseline out of your lube and off your patches, if you shoot black powder.

If you get your rifle working with paper patch, it should give 1 1/2 minute of angle.  Killing power of paper patched bullets is outstanding, and in my opinion they are the ultimate hunting bullet.  Shoot straight, rdnck

I read that article and had read several more before...am now trying to get set up for shooting them in my 375 win tc contender...plan to do a comparisome between shooting patched versus unpatched and will test for expansion in pure lead slugs also...should be a great article for the TCA mag sometime in the future. First I gotta get it working...is my summer project....since I know what works with jacketed...I have a reference to test against...ought to be fun...finding paper has been hard though..had a cbl lister send me a dozen sheet of 9lb...am in search of more...possible some 13lb or 16lb...this might get scarey before i am done...will be shooting smokless...with the intent of just having a grand old time....(also want to pp for my 308 bench gun...that might get interesting also...)

I finally got my sizer dies in and sized some 379 fplead bullets all the way down to .370...(long stretch i know)...have to do it in stages..but when patched they look great...mic at .377/8..just what the doctor ordered...using 9lb onion skin paper....0025 thickness...planning to load up some and go to the range soon...we shall soon know how a tc contender super 14 and a pp bullet behave shall we not...
