I looked in Midway and wound up buying a Williams Peep and a Marble front, together they ran me just over $50. Work fine for me. The Verniers are reall nice, but they cost an arm and leg.

You could get the less expensive non-adjustable model Williams like this one:http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=698217 and set your zero for what you like. You know, 100, 150, 200 yards. And then just know your holdover\under for different yardage.  That way your only spending $38.

Or you could "spring" for the more expensive target knob adjustable model like this http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=572292. Then you can "set" a yardage point for 100, 150, 200, 250, & 300. Of course, for hunting...you don't always have time to "click" the peep from say...100 to 250 yards, but that's a chance you take. And it also depends on where you hunt.

I have a Marlin 1895 in the 45-70 and I use the target model. I have mine marked at 100, 200 and 300 yards (I'm shooting\loading the new FTX Hornady's) and I usually just leave it set on the 200 yard zero and then I have a chart for the over\under taped to my stock. However, I've taken the 45-70 groundhog hunting....just for practice, and I adjust it for each "'hog shot".  Tough to hit 'em past 100 yards......but a whole lot of fun watchin 'em jump 'n run when you get 'em within a foot or so!!!!!

Good luck with your choice and good shootin!!!

Dave

Peep and Firesights are both covered in the FAQs.  ;)

There's normally only one mounting hole for the front sight, the required front sight ramp and Firesight insert are listed in that thread, the mounting hole will be either 3-48 or 6-48, H&R has used both, I've mounted them with both.

I'm thinking lever actions. Are you asking about Handis or Marlin/Winchesters? I don't remember a factory peep on levers since tang peeps fell out of favor with the introduction of scopes and smokeless powder. ::) I only remember BC peep sited Handi. For the levers, here is some suggestions:

Traditional would be the Marbels/Lyman tang peep and a Ivory bead front.
Target would be a Williams/Redfield/Lyman receiver peep with target knobs and a globe front site.
One popular for the last 50 or so years, would be a Williams/Redfield/Lyman receiver peep and a gold bead front.
Modern would be a XS Systems peep setup.

I have and really like the XS system and a have it with a Leupold 2X in their scout mount on a M375 Marlin. I really like the ability to have a peep and or a scope. With quick detach rings its pretty good with repeatable accuracy too. Not exact by any means, but plenty accurate to hit a whitetail at lever gun distances.
Most of my marlins wear a Redfield or Lyman peep with a white or gold bead front site. My Marlin 38-55 wears a Marbels tang with a globe front. I have one new model 32-20 with a Winchester ladder site and post front. This one is a hoot at longer distances. Think Augustus "Gus" McRae from Lonesome Dove shooting those bad guys doing the "chicken dance". All shoot as good as I expect them to. Scopes are nice for "older eyes", but IMHO, peep sites are what belongs on Marlins/Winchesters.
