restore case hardening/coloring

anybody out there ever do or hear of anyone restoring case coloring on receivers? or is it a case of- if it's gone, it's gone? got a couple of actions with case coloring very worn to almost non-existant, would really like to restore coloring, or is straight-out bluing possible? any advice greatly appreciated,  jather.

The factory used to do both for a pretty reasonable price , but I 'm not sure if they do. I'd give CS a call and post up what you find out.

I can see doing it on a nice firearm, but not on a $90 H&R. It's too bad it can't be done by the home gunsmith like small parts can be done,  but it's not an easy process that can be done at home for a frame.

thanks for the input, folks. should have clarified whether or not was doable outside of going to a professional. any problem going with a "good" cold blue or will it not take over what's left of original case coloring?    jather.

I am also interested in this, but it was my understanding that since the SB1 frame is a type of iron not steel it would be like trying to reblue a pre 1964 Winchester 94 which supposedly returns blotches and mixed purple colors. I was mainly researching Hot Caustic Bluing, so I do not know how a cold blue will react. If anyone has attempted one, please share your results. I have also wondered about a slow rust bluing or perhaps a browning.

   I've browned a few guns that turned out really nice. Birchwood Casey makes a product that works really good. you would need to strip the receiver first so none of the springs were heated in the process. Come to think of it that might be one more thing to add to the ultimate Handi. Browned metal with a tiger stripe finished stock. The newer frames with the blue don't look all that great anyway IMHO.
