One of many questions I couldn't answer.....
« on: May 25, 2009, 07:33:03 AM »
Hi All,

I was at the range shooting my Ruger 77/17.  It's not very accurate at 100 and I was kinda whining.  It has timney trigger and I use  leupold 12x fixed power scope.  Also, it's glass bedded.

The guy next to me said...."so...why don'cha just get a new barrel in 22k-hornet.  I'm intrigued, though the hornet is a CF...is it something that's doable????

The rifle you have is made in 22 hornet but I don't know about the K version which is a wildcat round.. Can yours be converted likely so but would be too costly... If there is an accuracy problem with the Ruger 77/17 Ruger's customer  service is very helpful. I'd certainly give them a try first..

Thanks Gun,

I have free floated the barrel and glass bed.  It'll shoot 2" at 100 and sometimes larger and I suspect the 17gr bullet is kinda wind sensitive.  It will shoot dime sized groups at 50yrds.  Maybe I'm asking too much of the cartridge??

No, not the cartridge but the rifle. In a good, well built rifle with a top notch barrel that cartridge is extremely accurate. Those Ruger rifles, however, are not always so. Some will work great, but most don't. They can be redone - new barrel, properly installed and headspaced, properly bedded, trigger tuned, good scope mounts, etc.

However, you can't make that one into a hornet. The Hornet model has a longer receiver, much wider magazine well, and totally different bolt. And those don't usually shoot very well either unless worked over.

Thanks Nobade....at 50yrd it'll make dime sized groups all day long....at 100...well.....2-3" if there's no wind.  Maybe I'll trade it...we'll see.
