Refreshing view of gun mags
« on: May 29, 2009, 04:37:42 AM »
I quit reading new gun mags for about a year and a half, so I've got a stack of new ones I haven't read. I just started going through them and it was very delightful. When you read them continuously they all start to seem the same, but after a break they seem exciting and new.

I have been phasing out the magazines this year and not renewing.

All they want to talk about is shooting guns that I either can't afford or refuse to own.

If I stick to anything it will be outdoor life or field and stream.
I forget which is which but one is fairly political --- I'll be dumping that one.

I got a call from GUNS AND AMMO telling me I could get a BIG discount if I renew my subscription.
I told them I wasn't interested in the rag anymore even if they sent it to me FREE!
I remember when it was a 120 page mag with maybe 1/8 of them ads.
Now it's down to less than 80 pages with at least 1/3 of them ads.

Most of the gun mags are just ads now. Articles included. I don't read them much anymore.

I keep saying I am gonna cut back on them too, but lately it seems that most of them are really lowering the subscrpition rates.  When they get to $12/yr and sometimes less, like F&S, OL, etc.  I renew.  I enjoy them and I like the ads too.  I mean the firearm-related ads.  They can keep Viagra and enhancement products out!  ::) Like they told us in the service - "This is my rifle, this is my gun." Or maybe that's what they are referring to. :D

I dropped them all years ago! I don't think we should have to pay for ads.

Same with watching outdoor tv! All they do is try to sell you fishing and hunting gear.

I have cancelled most all my subscriptions as well.  I recently had a quiet day home alone and sar down with my new Outdoor Life magazine.  In about 20 minutes or less I flipped past all the advertisements, saw only 3 or 4 articles of which only 2 were interesting to me.  After reading them I realized I wasted 20 minutes.  I sent a letter to the editor but they didn't bother to reply.

Paying for advertisements is a waste of money.  I understand they need to sell add space, but they get money from each of those advertisers and inturn sell the adds to us.

I like "Field & Stream" & "Backwoodsman".  "Rifle" & "Handloader" are also good most of the time.

Sporting Classics, Rifle, and Handloader are the only ones I subscribe to and have for several years. All are quality reading

I stopped reading Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, and Sports Afield back in 1994 when I realized they were not going to support gun owners. I forget which, but one had even started carrying articles on golf.

Check that page with the fine print about circulation and ownership and see who owns them, and take a look at the other magazines that company sells. Anti gun, most of them, although I get the impression that Hearst has backed off on that.

Fur-Fish-Game is about all I read now.

Sports Afield (several years ago) did change their venue from the outdoors, hunting, and fishing to more urban/yuppy recreation.  It took me about two issues to drop my subscription after that.  IIRC they really foundered with that concept and went back to their old outdoors venue.  I never re-subscribed or paid much attention to them after that, but I think they are still around.
As far as Outdoor Life and F& S being anti-gun, I do not agree.

It was a subtle thing, more what was not printed than what was.

None of the three mentioned the laws being argued back in 1968, 1986, or 1994. None said "we have to stand together to protect our rights".

"He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it."
-Martin Luther King Jr.-

Even worse, Zumbo, an editor for Outdoor Life, came out in support of the 94 gun ban and for reimposing that gun ban, as he thought the only guns we should own were the ones that could be used for hunting, and these "assault weapons" were not useful for hunting. He only "reconsidered" when people blew up and convinced him that people actually did use them for hunting. He never did accept that the 2ndA meant the people should be able to fight against government tyranny.

The biggest example of the need for the 2ndA is Philadelphia during the last P election. Black Panthers blocked the doors to a polling station, and the cops did nothing. In fact, the charges that were eventually filed were dropped last week. Watch the next election. We have Brown Shirts in the early stages of formation, that's when civilians can act if the cops don't.

Well Zumbo is a ding-ding and "the market" let it be known that they did not appreciate his thoughts. So did I.  In fact I got an AR at about that time. Case closed as far as I am concerned.
I will continue to support lawful gun ownership through my active involvement in promoting the shooting sports, teaching safety, letting my lawmakers (and anyone who might listen) know what I think, and supporting pro-gun organizations like the NRA, ISRA, and our local ranges and clubs.
And I am going to keep enjoying reading my gun and outdoor magazines, ads and all.

They may have changed. I still don't read them anymore. Just Fur-Fish-Game.

I find it amazing that people like Zumbo would hold such beliefs. He certainly must know the progression of laws that occurred in England and Australia.

But then again, even the late, great, Bill Ruger said publicly that nobody needs more than 10 rounds in a magazine.

Let my subsrciption to American Handgunner expire 6-7 yeras ago. Only 2 mags I get now is North American Hunter, and Hunter, just because I'm a life member to both.
This past weekend, stopped by a grocery store for some stuff, and walked by the magazine rack. Picked up the latest issue of A.H. Took all of about a minute to thumb thru it, put it back in the rack. Couldn't see paying $6 for a magazine that looked just like the last one 6 years ago.
With what the company's charge for ad space, the magazines shouldn't cost more than about a buck.  gypsyman
