SHANE definitely deserves consideration, High Noon makes my stomach turn! Cooper runnin' all over town begging for help...it just ain't...well, "WESTERN!" Watch Howard Hawks' RIO BRAVO and compare the two main characters. Duke's "Sheriff John T. Chance" makes Cooper's "Marshal Will Kane" look like a sissy in short pants!!!

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one pardner! Have nothing what so ever against the "Duke". But high noon represents (to me) what that situation would prolly be like. There were a lotta things going on there.
His deputies were either scared or jealous, he only asked for help when they backed out on him. Then there were the folk that didn't like the fact that after he ran the bad guys outa town the first time the "fun " stopped. He had after all retired and gotten married, it wasn't his fight but he felt obligated to finish it. Hell he had even left but turned around and came back. To me it was realistic in that when the chips are down you can only really count on yourself! And for you " western" fANS HE DID TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM! with the help of his lovely wife. I'd say watch it again ,objectitvely ,and you may see that although he AINT the duke he handled it without the help of Dean Martin and Rick Nelson. But like William says , it would be boring if we all loved the same girl.

Will Penny, Lonesome Dove, and The unforgiven, have to be there also!

Okey-doke Randy (my name, too!), we'll just have to agree to disagree on High Noon. I've seen it about 6 or 7 times and just something about the Sheriff goin' from place to place begging for help never did sit right with me! I guess I just want my western heroes to be strong and self-reliant. Now, if you're talkin' what things prolly would've been like...geez, I'm beggin' for help, too....or gettin' the heck outta town with Grace Kelly! Just not what I like in a movie.
But, Will Penny, Lonesome Dove and Unforgiven all made my list!
Keep yer powder dry...

P.S...When folks are listing "The Unforgiven" I am assuming they mean just "Unforgiven" starring Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman, a truly GREAT movie! "THE Unforgiven" is a cheap, crappy western starring Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn and ain't even in the same ballpark!

I'm thinking the Wild bunch as best western. The story lines the old west meets the new west and the old ways are slowly dying along with theses old guys who will not be able to fit in soon,so they go out in a blaze of glory. The Shootist. The duke gave a fantastic performance,knowing he would really die fairly soon. And any Louis L'lamour books made into movies with Tom Sellick and Sam Elliot. I beleive Sam Elliot to be a great character actor,just born 40 years to late to be a western superstar.

Three come to mind when I think western;

Magnificent 7   People who rise beyond themselves, the surrrvivors aren't the only ones that win

Stagecoach      Principle before surrvival

The Horse Soldiers
 Maybe not a Western but the best I've seen in a movie on calvary tactics, discipline, and manuver.  It wasn't a gun that won the West.  It was the farmers, ranchers, trappers, merchants, drifters and explorers, backed by Troops underpaid and generally with elderly firearms and equipment.  Same volunteer troops we got today, just a different generation.  Kipling said it best in Barracks Room Ballads.  Find a copy and read "Tommy".

I'll throw one of my favorites in the mix ... Conagher

Put Sam Elliott together with Ken Curtis and you have a winner!

A western TV show that I really liked was  ... The Macahans with Bruce Boxleitner and James Arness, I don't think it's even available on video.

Going way back...  Who remembers the name of a Wallace Berry western?  It was probably made in the 40's or so.  Remember it from when I was a kid.  Seems I remember him being a crusty old outlaw.  Anyway Im sure most people don't even know who Im talking about.  Reading through these threads just got me to thinkging....

I checked them out and I think the one I was thinking of was "Bad Bascomb".   He was a kick.
