TERRIBLE SMELL FROM NEW GUN SAFE!!
« on: May 28, 2009, 05:41:20 PM »
Got a new Sentry gun safe  a few days ago and  the thing   was packed well and looked great out of the box. Then I  opened the safe up!! :o :o :o   There is this  HORRIBLE AND I DO MEAN HORRIBLE !!! SMELL THAT IS POURING OUT FROM INSIDE THE SAFE!!      So, I opened the windows and let a fan run for 2 days now and still it stinks !!   Tried Frabreeze and baking soda   but that is no good.   I closed the door in the room where it is in and cannot go in there  without getting a headache from the smell .  The whole room REAKS FROM A CHEMICAL  SMELL FROM THE SAFE!!

I called the Sentry Safe  company up yesterday and told them the problem.   They said to send it back .  They knew right away what it was!!  They said that the glue they use to glue the carpet into the safe  sometimes does not set  and there is nothing you can do with it. They then said to give it another couple of days to see if that was really the problem.

This morning, I opened the door to the room and almost immeadiatly got a headache from the oder.   So, I opened all the windows and had the fan running full blast.   That helped some,  but tonight I closed up the safe and the windows because of the  rain.  The smeel    came right  back.

I also called the safe company back  this morning and told them  again of the problem.  This time, a person  told me to put it outside for at least 2 weeks.  2 weeks outside and if it gets wet , the warrenty will be void!!

What would you all do in this situation ?   I am seriously  thinking of calling the store up tomorrow and demanding my money back and having the owner of the store come to my house to personally see for themselves what the smell is like.

What a let down CT. How big of a safe is it? I mean that thing must weigh a lot? If you send it back, are they going to pay the shipping? It appears that you bought it locally? If that's the case, I'd have the store come get it and give you a new one without the smell, or give you your money back. I hope it's that simple.

Is that an insulated safe?  Was that safe made in China?  China has made some really bad insulation that has made a lot of folks sick.

Take it back.

Bought it locally . Store in town , in fact!!

It is the Sentry G1459C  14 gun  gun safe.  Not all that heavy.  About 183 pounds, I think.

I know the store owners are NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY WHEN I CALL THEM THIS MORNING  ABOUT IT !! ::)

I checked out the warrenty  last night  before I went to sleep.    From what it says online on the Sentry Safe website,   I got  90 days to send it back to the store or the Company and they will give me a full refund. At least , that is what it says  on the Sentry safe website.

I told Sentry Safe that I really regret not buying the Cherry Gun Cabinet instead of this hunk of stinking junk!!

I thought it was made in the USA,  but I found out when I saw the box it came in that it was , indeed , made in CHINA!!

Take it back before the warranty expires.

Now, if you bought it as a factory second or on sale, you might try putting it in a shed with the door mostly closed and a heater or some high wattage light bulbs inside to try to cook it out, but this was new and it should be usable without a lot of messing around.

Called the store up and explained the whole situation. I was VERY POLITE !!  ( I want my money back  !!)    I told him the whole problem with it  and that although on the outside and the inside it LOOKS GREAT, the safe   STINKS TERRIBLE LIKE   like someone poured  carpet glue or contact cement on the inside of it.  I explained that  I know it was not their fault and it was certainly not my fault. It was the fault of the manufacturer.  I told him I get a headache as soon as I go into the room and that the whole house is starting to stink from it!!    It told him that I looked on the company website and that I can get either a replacement or full refund within 90 days if  I am not 100 % satisfied  with it.  He told me that he is not going to get a replacement. I said that is fine.  I just want my  money  refunded and for them to get that out of my house.    He said he would start on the paperwork right away.

There seems to be only one hitch to the whole thing and I don't know how this is going to work out.

They got the safe from a sporting goods wholesaler , who in turn  got it from the Company itself.  Now,  I don't know if the wholesaler is going to give the retailer a hassle in taking the safe back and returning my money.

Personally, I wouldn't care whether the store owners were happy or not. If I were in your shoes it would already be back in the store where I bought it.

There was something on the news a while back about extremely foul odors from chinese drywall to the point that a lot of it had to be torn out after it was put in. Toxic chemicals. Chinese junk. Think of the conditions the people making this crap work in. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

Aside from the toxic fumes, I'd be afraid to put a gun into it because of the possible damage to finishes, glues, optics, etc.

Take it back to the retailer, period.  Get your money back.

Let the retailer work it out with the wholesaler, that is their business.  The wholesaler then has to work it out with the manufacturer.  That's how business works.

You don't really want one of those lightweight safes anyway.  Too easy to steal along with their contents.  I know I've taken two out of houses, even after they had been bolted to the wall.

ONE  THING IS FOR CERTAIN, THAT STORE WON'T BE GETTING MY BUSINESS ANYMORE !!

As far as I know , the safe company only has a couple of gun safes made in the USA !

Might not even need to waste a stamp. Most of the time you can get that stuff settled just by a phone call.

Only thing is that I read a good while back that some Internet sites have a little "alliance" banded together that will blacklist a customer if they ever reverse a credit card charge, and if you ever get blacklisted none of them will deal with you anymore.  Not sure if local merchants have anything similar, but it's just something to be mindful of.

If it is the glue, maybe you ought to call the Sentry safe company back, tell them that since it's their product, and the smell is giving you headache's, your going to contact the EPA and have them come out to check it out. If that safe was made over in China, with all the poisons in dog food and toothpaste, hard telling what kinda cemical they used for glue. Maybe that will give them some incentive to make it right. gypsyman

Had a store pull that once on me.  When I told the manager I was going to put a letter to the editor in the local news paper, he changed his mind and fixed the problem.
