Barrel brands?
« on: May 21, 2009, 03:53:57 AM »
Just coming here for some opinions.  I've got a 1917 Eddystone action that I've had laying around for a while and I'm looking to finally get a barrel on it.

I'm specifically looking at 4 brands:

Adams and Bennet
ER Shaw
Shilen
Douglas

I already have a Mauser in .257 Roberts built on an Adams and Bennet that shoots great, but I've heard that A&B barrels are hit or miss, and if that's the case if I got lucky once then I'd rather not gamble.

So, ER Shaw looked to be a decent option for a few dollars more, and Shilen or Douglas was again a few dollars more than that, but still looks like it might be in my budget.

Basically I'm just looking for opinions.  Also, I'm pretty sure that both A&B and the Shaw barrels are button rifled.  Anybody know if Shilen and Douglas are as well?

Thanks.

Only done it once and used a Shilen Match Grade Stainless.  Works just fine.

Well if I was planning on a nice sporter a cut rifled Kreiger barrel would be my first choice. Bit more expensive but worth it.
Shilen would be my second choice and Douglas would be my third. A lot of high power shooters I know swear by the kreiger barrels. And I believe that Kreiger does do the actual installation on their barrels. Shilen and Douglas are button rifled barrels. And I believe that you can specify land heights as well. been awhile since I was at the kreiger web site. Frank

You can go to benchrest.com and look at the ads by the major barrel makers and installers. You don't say "how big." That 17 is not a small, light action. Great for magnums. .243? No recoil felt... The big names have a wait. (Surprise.) Hope you weren't thinking of yesterday...

The list of names is almost endless. Lilja. Pac Nor. Bartlein. In the makers of match barrels you can about flip a coin. Obermeyer if he has time. Shilen has a great name. Douglas has been around forever. Some say the button rifled last a bit longer, but if you are shooting moose how important is that. Prairie dogs another matter. Hit the search engines and enjoy your "hunt." Happy trails.

To tell the truth I'm still deciding on caliber.  Based on some recommendations I've had I decided against chambering it for a magnum.  Not so much for pressure reasons, but rather I heard from many that it was just difficult to get it setup in such a way that the cartridges feed reliably.

With that in mind I've been waffling around, but the 3 that I'm thinking about are 6.5x55, .35 Whelan, or 9.3x62mm.

I had a 6.5x55 M96 Swedish sporter once upon a time.  I liked the round, but the rifle just wasn't as accurate as I'd like (2.5" - 3" groups at 100), and I hated the pressure restrictions of the small ring Mauser when it came to handloading.  I sold the rifle a while back and told myself I'd get another.   Benefits there is that I have 2 die sets, brass, and plenty of bullets still left over since I fully plan to get another 6.5x55 before too long.  I've already got the .257 Roberts though which is close-ish in performance, so it's not like I'm filling a hole in my arsenal.

.35 Whelan or 9.3x62 would be nice too.  I have sporting rifles in 8mm Mauser and .30-06, but nothing bigger than that, so a medium bore thumper would be nice if I ever take a hunting trip that needs it, but normally the biggest things I hunt are whitetail (about 200 lbs max) and feral hogs (about 350 lbs max).  Also, ammo prices for either of these is higher - particularly for 9.3x62.

No hurry on it though.  I've been piecing this thing together for a long while now.  I've got other rifles to hunt and shoot with :).

Hi,

I've built (had built) two w shilens, a .300 and a .270 and am waiting on a 243 rebarrel from ER Shaw.  I don't think that you can wrond with any of the premium after market barrels.

had Shaw rebarrel a Mauser. Work was flawless and the barrel works grate. You might also consider a Lothar Walther barrel

Pac-Nor and Benchmark barrels are great! You will never be disappointed with either of them.  Boots Obermeyer makes great barrels too, but there is a long wait, I think he's making barrels for the military now.  Good luck!

As an after thought, if you want the same profile as the origional barrel. Criterion which is a sub division of Kreiger I believe, makes the military profile barrels in 30-06 for the cmp and folks who rebarrel these actions so they can compete in the military matches. They are button rifled and have a good reputation. Check the cmp website for more info. Frank
