Tim, that's nice shooting with the non-optical sights!  I read that link and am going to try MSP's load with the 2400.  I've been having good luck with 2400 under cast 500 grain bullets.  I'll definitely have to try the 350 jacketed with the 2400 next.
Funny thing about 2400 is that it seems like a lot of the modern load books don't list 2400 very much for loads these days as compared to some of the older books.  Any ideas why?

tykempster, once again, nice shooting.  It seems like the slower velocities give better results.  I was under the impression that I had to juice up the velocity in order to get a better spin and stability on the bullets, but you and Tim and others seem to show otherwise.

How'd you catch that little lady at 300 yards like that?  That's good shootin' too!  ;)

Thanks for the input guys!

Alliant used to list 2400 in their modern rifle data, it's listed in my 45-70 Loadbook on page 46, 350gr bullet(doesn't specifiy jacketed or cast, or any specifics about load or test barrel), 27gr start @ 1503fps, 29gr max @ 1579fps. In their trapdoor data, they list only max loads of 25gr for 1340fps for a 385gr cast bullet, and 1260fps for a 400gr Speer JFN. They list the 300gr Hornady with 30gr @ 1650fps, trapdoor loads are from a 24" barrel, Rem brass, 9½ primer.

thanks,

Tim

Hey, thanks for the load info Tim.  My old Lyman catalog has some 2400 loads in it but the (49th ? 46th ?)...well, the most recent one..doesn't have 2400 in it anymore, yet they list it in their T/C pistol data.  I thought that was funny.

It always kind of bugged me when a load manual doesn't specify a load as being for cast or jacketed bullets.  There obviously is a pressure difference between the two.  I've probably ignored a lot of good data because it didn't specify the bullet type.  Sometimes I'll take some time to figure things out and look at comparative loads but I usually fall to the safe side of things and just look for other data.  A lot of the Lee data that comes with their dies is famous for not specifying a bullet type or only giving a max load and no absolute minimums.

Anyway, thanks again!

I had a very old square metal can labeled 2400 Rifle Powder. It was good stuff in it's time but newer and "better" have come along. Turn of the century rifle velocities were so much less then. As for the 45-70, who needs more than the original. Hard to improve on that.

Unless you consider hard to improve only meaning more speed, energy, and accuracy.  ???

1.5 inches at 100 yards is 3 inches at 200 yards. that's good shooting.

well i went shooting yesterday. 46gn of 4064 with a 405 gn ldfp did not do so well. in fact it was horrible in accuracy. and recoil was higher than i wanted for plinking. i still haveny bought the reloader 7 yet but i think im going to try 40gns of  H4895 next. ive been using the starting loads from hodgdons website. the H4895 is very low pressure. so then i will begin increasing powder when i find one that works decent i guess.

And every time you try a new rifle, it's so exciting.  All the anticipation; the actual shooting; the cleaning up afterward... it's always... different.  And ol Betsy just sits there in the corner of the safe being perfectly faithful, hoping she'll be picked next time but ready to perform whether or not.
