.410 slug gun

Heres a question probably answered before. Since the 410 receiver is so thick compared to the other shotgun barrels, Can I drill and tap the barrel for one of the factory scope mounts?
I planned on shorting the barrel to take out the full choke. Say around 22 inches?

heck yes  you can no reason you cant, they drill all the rifle barrels  also , you have a lot of material on a 410 barrel ,

  I already had mine done.  The gunsmith didn't shorten the barrel though, he just opened up the end a bit losing the constriction.  With the 3" Brenneke slugs I get about 3" groups at 50yds.  I lost a good deer 3 years ago with that gun and my mother tracked hers for a mile after a decent shot.  We have upgraded to other calibers now. In a rifle barrel the .357Mag is much better than the .410.  I just couldn't find a heavy slug for the 410 in a factory loading. I think the Brenneke's are only 114gr. If you intend to hunt with the 410, practice your shots and shorten your expected range, the 410 is definitely for short range only.

I agree with dinny. The .410 can be a deer gun as long as you can accept that you need to stay within bow range.
My 13 year old daughter uses a .410 versa pack for deer hunting with 2 1/2" 000 buck. She practices at 25 yards and she knows that
is the maximum range she can take a shot at. If you need more range than that get a 20 gauge Pardner. Those can be drilled and tapped for a scope mount also.

No, just more of a play gun, than anything. It probably will never even leave the yard, something that I have wanted to do for a while. I have a 45/70 that I use for deer hunting.

Good plan, have fun with it.  Feral/stray animals around the house fear my 410 slug gun. As mentioned, it is also pretty fun with buckshot.  There's some out there that's just a few(4 or 5) round balls lined up in the shell, probably the 000. If you want to save your barrel, I would  give you a fair price on my slug barrel, just PM me if interested.

I would try the bbl. before cutting . I have a full choke one that shoots slugs and buckshot well . Its an old Savage with the lever on the side . They used the sane frame for 410 thru 12 ga. So it could be tapped easy .
Just about every year around here a kid kills a big deer with 410 buck shot . Last one was a 70 yard shot ( yep  luck but it worked ) . Check out ballistic products for slugs if you reload . I like the buckshot with 5 balls it puts more down range than a slug . A buckshot comming out of a 410 or a 12 ga. going 1200 fps does the same thing at the target .

I have a .410 survivor, I just leave the choke out of it and shoot .45 and slugs, pretty dang accurate with the slugs, and ok with the .45 though not super. You may want to go this route and save your .410 as is for bird shot. oh and my survivor is scoped as well.

I 2nd the trying the barrel before cutting it. My daughters .410 has a full choke and shoots slugs very well and 2 1/2" 000 buckshot very well. I tried the 3" winchester 000 buck and it patterned like crap.

Thanks guys! I will try the slugs out of the full choke before cutting the barrel. I have 5 boxes of .410 slugs (not legal for deer hunting in my state) but gander mountain carries them because they are so close to wisconsin minn and iowa (not sure which state they are legal in) but usually end up getting them at the end of the season really cheap (1.50 a box)

I will have to try em this afternoon. I have the SB1 and a tamer both in .410, I have always read not to shoot slugs out of a full choke, and normally don't shoot slugs, as most of our shooting is high power rifle. We live out in the middle of nowhere and the tamer is our snake gun (we have BIG snakes and lots of em :o)

the warning is for old thin bbl guns , double guns with thin bbls sometimes will get a ring where the choke starts if the slug is a tight fit ( which most aren't ). Most slugs are a loose fit to the bbl for safety these days .

I keep reading about all of these .410 slug guns and they sound fun. I think I am going to have to build one to use on those pesky opposums, dillos, and coons.

Here's yet another variant of the 'ol .410 slug gun.  Perhaps someday we can get or make a barrel for a H&R/NEF.

sorry moose, but its at the Mother in laws place, that way she can use it to fend off critters, and I dont have a pic of it available.

basically you can look at any of the Handi rifles with a red dot and thats what itll look like cept it has the thumbhole stock.

I kept the same length, just had the end opened up just a little bit to lessen the constriction.  I'm told that it may not be needed and the slugs shoot fine through the full choked guns.

I had my .410 built into a slug shooter, and it was very accurate with Winchester superX 2 1/2" rifled slugs. Had the breech drilled & tapped an it carried a 4X32 bushnell scope. Loved that little gun it was a great shooter! scout4<><

Thanks Moose! Its a dandy! The new owner likes it very much, I guess he bought it for his wife says shoots great! Thats a cylinder bore 24" barrel, with a muzzle crown like a rifle. scout4<><

In that last photo some holes are from buckshot I tried just to see if I could hit something with it. I believe all holes in the center are slug shots. Sometime I'm gonna have another .410 slugger. It'll be some different from this 1st one, except for the barrel. From my experience opening that bore up and gettin a decent sight system really makes the difference. Thanks, scout4<><
