Manure or composted manure?
« on: June 01, 2009, 05:48:32 AM »
I've been adding some composted manure to our garden soil to improve the soil. What's the difference between using manure and composted manure? A nearby horse farmer has lots of manure and it's a lot cheaper to buy that than to buy compost. Thanks.

Horse manure is what they call hot.  It takes a lot of an additive, I can not remember if it is lime or what, I'm not a gardner, just an old horseman.  If the horses are stalled they usually have been using wood chips as bedding and there is more wood chips than manure in some cases.  Horse manure will kill some plants, and it also has seeds from the feed the horses ate.  Palletized and cubed feed comes from all over the country and has seeds from the area grown in them.

Most horse people I know cannot find a place to get rid of the stuff, and will give it away to any one that wants it, just to get it off the place.  People I know that do use it will get it in the fall and roto-till it into the ground.  Let it set all winter then use it in the spring.

Manure or composted manure?
I thought this was about O-bamo and Hillery

OK Composted is NOT HOT as SD has said ,
but if you can Free manure take it and mix grass clippings and such make your own Black gold
If you just want to use the manure use it sparingly
I would use it directly if I had pathway I'd just put it there so it can leach in
You also could pile it for a good amount of time, then put in in the garden

Just mix it in your garden composted or non composted it is great fertilizer. Only down side is it will have weed seed. Depending on where u are at in MN my dad has turkeys ans the manure from them is great. The feed is cooked and peletised with no weed seed.

Manure from horses or cows will have lot's of seeds that will plant your garden full of fertilized weeds.
Composted manure will kill most of the seeds.

Horse manure IS NOT good garden fertilizer. It is TOO HOT. Read on the difference in the cow digestive trac and it's STOMACH "S", and the horse, and it will become quite apparent.

A guy just brought me 5 bucket fulls of horse manure, never used it before so this is very interesting. I've used cow manure with gret success. I'd pick up the dried patties and crumble  them into a 5 gal bucket with about 3 inches or so, then fill the bucket with water and let it sit for several days. That made about 20-25 gal of liquid gold. I'd use 1 gal and add 3 1/2 - 4 gal of water, too potent straight. This horse manure I have has been covered with water for over a week now. How much water should I add withou burning up my plants. My neighbor has used horse manure all his life. POWDERMAN.  ??? ???

Horse manure will do just fine on a garden as long as you also cover it with burnt lime and till it all in.
Have been doing this for many years and we have a very good garden every year.
