Primer shortage
« on: May 22, 2009, 03:14:55 AM »
I got a notice that Midway USA got in Remington small rifle primers (7 1/2) yesterday at 2:38 PM. I tried to order on line last night, but it kept coming up "Out of Stock". So I waited until shop opened this AM and phoned in my order. The rep said they were sold out. I said I just got an e-mail yesterday that they were in. He said let me check. He got back on and said they got in 300K yesterday and they sold out in 1 hour. There are primers being made - they are just being snapped up as fast as they become available. I should have called yesterday, but It was 5:30 before I got home and I tried to order on line and the site would not let me - because they were already sold out, but I did not know it. Since I could not order on line, I thought I would call in my order - just too late. The market has got to be saturated sooner or later with those kind of numbers.  ::)???  :(

Yeah, the supply will catch up with the demand eventually. The shortage probably effects shooters who normally order in small lots, and don't have sufficient supply on hand. Now they are in the panic mode and spending the 401k money to stock up. I keep enough components on hand to get by for an extended period (I shoot less too) I shoot a lot of rimfire in conversion units for practice. When components become available again and the price stabilizes I'll restock. I find myself doing more loading than shooting now days. It gives me a good supply of loaded ammo JIC!

The market has got to be saturated sooner or later with those kind of numbers.

Wishful thinking IMO.   Those shipments are far a few between going to reloading supply retailers, with 300K only a drop in the bucket for nationwide/worldwide demand, even without the hoarding that is going on.   It'll be much later, not sooner, before this shortage starts turning around (if ever, also IMO).

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I stopped at my gun store about an hour ago and picked up a pound of H414. I did not expect to see any primers as they have been out for a while, but they did have a bunch of small pistol mag. primers. They had just got them.
I didn't know whether the would be safe to use in my .38 special and .40 S&W so I passed them up. Even though I am out of small pistol primers.

I was in town on other business today and stopped by the local supply station (powder and primers) about 11:00 AM. Low and behold they had 1800 WLR and 1000 WLRM. I picked up 1K of each. I would have bought every thing they had, but at $40 a pop, I will get by with what I got. That will feed my 444 Marlin and 30-30 for a while. They said they had in small rifle primers this AM, but sold out quickly - again just a little too late. I shoot by far and wide more small rifle primers than any thing else. They are showing up, but they are getting snapped up as fast as they come in. One of these days the guys that buying them up real fast will get all they need and can not sell them on flea bay. Then we will get what we need.

Because of the Haz Mat fee, people usually buy at least 5k primers at a shot when they mail order. Do the math, 300k primers probaby filled well under 60 orders.

I was at my component supplier yesterday. He believes that the primer shortage will be over by the end of next month. Winchester told him that they expect to catch up on their back-orders by the end of next month. He told me the worst shortage is in small rifle primers because of the popularity of the .223.

Well after being on the backorder list for small rifle primers with Cabela's for nearly 3 months I got an email this morning that my order isn't a backorder anymore, it's a cancelled order.  I lost my spot in the queue and I'm really not happy about it.
