A Red Dot Scope Recommendation Needed.
« on: September 07, 2003, 03:04:06 AM »
I'm going to put a red dot scope on my hunting handgun and just found out that the Leupold Gilmore is discontinued.  The local store has one, and also a Nikon, and a Tasco.  Any thoughts on quality and durability?

I always wanted the Leupold Gilmore, but I don't know now since it was discontinued.  Are there better ones?  Anyone know?

Thanks
Delgue

JD Jones of SSK fame told me the one made by MicroDot/UltraDot is the best on the market.  http://www.ultradotusa.com/ The only one I have experience with and can recommend is the Bushnell Holosight.

Bushnell halo sight is awesome. I have one on my 454 Raging Bull . Several hundred rounds with no problems and the dot is very small.

This is just up my ally, I have several different types of red dot sights. I have the Tasco Pro-point PD3 on my Redhawk 44 MAG, Ruger .22 slab side and Ruger P4 .22, a Bushnell Holo sight on my S&W 625 in 45 ACP, Aim point on my H&K USC 45 ACP, a Millet on a Ruger Super Redhawk 44 MAG and an Ultra Dot on my S&W500MAG. Surprising is the Tasco Pro Points have held up to thousands of round, the Bushnell has done a great job on the S&W625 after thousands of rounds. The ultra dot is holding up very well also. I did have to send the Aim Point back for repair due to a faulty switch, the turn around was just over a week which I think was great service from Aim Point. I also had to send back the Millet due to the dot going off and on after each shot. But again Millet sent me a new one in about 2 weeks. But if I had to just pick one it would be the Bushnell Holo sight. Then Aim Point.

I have a Ultra-Dot 30mm on a Dan Wesson 44 mag. couldn't be any happier. It's has held up very well. I have a Bushnell on a Browning Buckmark it's nice but, it's not a Ultra-Dot. Good Luck!  Hippie

I also have a 30MM Ultradot on my SRH 44 and it has taken a beating without any problems. I once slipped and did a end-o down a rock bluff with the gun, needless to say the scope and gun did better than I did. Dusted things off and it was still right on.  The one thing that I really like is the ability to turn it on to Max or Min depending on the direction you turn the knob. This way you can leave it off and when a shot opportunity arises you can quickly turn it on Max while bringing the gun up to shoot. Some models have buttons that you have to push and bump your way up to the intensity you want. I know it may be a trivial thing but........

I dislike most of the reddot sights because they are really too big to fit on a revolver. I bought 3 of the Tasco optima 2000s and am very happy with them. They are very small, maybe 3" long, 1" high and weigh 1-2 ounces. They fit comfortably on a handgun and holsters only require small modifications to accomidate them. You are suppose to get about 2000 hours of usage before the batteries have to be replaced. They also automatically adjust the dot brightness base how dark it is. The controls to move the dot could stand some improvement though.

Tasco is out of buisness but you can find them on EBAY. An improved version is available from this web sight for $200.

My Ultradot (1") works great on my SRH.  No problem at all after many rounds.

ConradCA: I think the Optima may be the same as the Docter sight sold in Europe. I have a Docter and it's excellent.  It's a great size for a handgun too.

By the way, I also use an Ultradot and it's a very good sight, but the Docter/Optima is vastly better. There's really no comparison.

What makes the Optima better than Ultradot?

I don't know about their red dots, but tasco's scopes were horrible.

UltraDot . . . another vote

I like my UltraDot 30mm.  I've had it mounted on a Ruger Super Redhawk .44mag for about 4 years now.  I've shot heavy factory and handloads through it now without a problem.  Shots consistent 2" groups at 50 yards and I'm only on my 2nd battery.
