tc qla
« on: June 02, 2009, 04:36:39 AM »
I just ordered a new barrel for my 54 cal Renegade the other day and then I realized it will come with the qla.I remember reading quite a few negative comments on this feature and I would like to hear some real world opinions. The barrel I ordered is the 26" 1-48 twist.I plan on shooting 90% round ball out of it but would also like to try some conicals. I would have ordered the 1-66 twist but that comes in a 30" inch barrel and since I allready have a gpr I don't want a duplicate.I plan on doing a lot more still hunting this year so I thought a shorter gun would be a little Handier in the thick stuff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Forcon

you could have ordered it without the qla, you just had to request it to the shop.

I had a QLA barrel that I shot 300 grain XTP saboted bullets out of.  It shot well.  I never tried roundballs.

Mine has a qla and shoots great. I seem to remember some people got barrels that had the qla machined crooked. If you don't want it though, hopefully they will accommodate you.

I had a T/C Pennsylvania Hunter .50 caliber with the QLA and had no complaints with it. I shot only patched roundballs. I like to cut my patches at the muzzle and found I had to keep my patch knife very sharp and take it easy to avoid pulling the ball back up while cutting the patch but it was not a major issue.

Problem solved. The nice folks at T.C. called today and said they could make a barrel without qla. It"ll be 3-4 months before I recieve it,but I should have plenty of time to get it dialed in.Thanks for all the responses.FORCON!

It's an unrifled section at the muzzle that's a little oversized to align a bullet in a plastic sabot with the rifling. So it goes in straight when you push it in with the ramrod.

Some people were getting barrels where the qla was machined crooked and they were having accuracy issues.

TC has a detailed explanation on the QLA in their FAQs.
