I don't know about the 12 ga. part of it, but I'm ordering a .44 Mag. barrel as we speak.  I have had great results with the .357s and thought to move up to the .44s.  I'll let you know more in a few weeks.

I have a 12 ga. 3.5 " chambered Turkey barrel for my Handi SB2.
The Gun is very light weight and recoil is heavy, if you shoot Slugs & 00 Buck. I have shot both checking how well they grouped and worked. I will never shoot a Slug from my Handi, from the bench again. Accuracy was acceptable,  25 yards, elevation was on and 2" to the right. It was a Winchester 1 oz., the right pull could have been me. And I did not want to shoot a second slug.

I ordered the Turkey barrel as it was threaded for chokes. It came with a full turkey choke tube, and I have a Modified tube also.

I also have a 44 mag. for the SB2 action. I use the 44 Handi as part of my 44 Trio. The others are; A 1973 Ruger Super Black Hawk and a Rossi 92/44 lever Rifle. I reload and shoot all three with the same lead & jacketed 44 special or Mag. loads.

The SB1 44mag combo comes with a rifled slug barrel, both barrels have scope mounts, no sights.

TKKP ,

I have this combo you are asking about ... Accuracy out of this 44 ( Marlin made ) barrel with a cast .430 lead round nose flat point slug with a helping of Winchester's 296 powder is just awesome and very consistent ... I did find that before i changed from CCI primers to Winchester large pistol primers that the Winchester white box 240gr jacketed soft points were going to the same point of aim as the reloads, Now i dont know ... But like you I'm not worried about putting another barrel on this rifle ... As for the 12 ga slug barrel like the boys have said the thing is scary light ... So my guess without having even fired a round through it is it would kick like a SOB ... But then again it probably wouldnt be any worse then firing both barrels of my double barrel shotgun with rifled slugs to see just how bad it would be should it ever happen on accident ( this side by side shotgun has a hard plastic butt plate )

But as far as accuracy out of the slug barrel i couldnt honestly say ... But i would still recommend the combo to you for if for no other reason but the 44 mag .. If you live around an area that you want to hunt that only allows slug guns then you will deffinatley have the lightest and handiest rifle of anyone you know .. If that is the case and you are not big on heavy recoil then i would recommend a limb saver slip on to help tame it ... I may eventually use the slug barrel for hunting should i decide to venture off to one of the hunting zones in my state that requires a slug gun only .. But until then , the 44 does everything i could want it to do ..

       Hope this helps,

Another option would be to just get the 44 and if you still want a slug barrell order the 20ga much more managable recoil. we have both 20 & 12 in our arsenal and when my son isn't hunting with me I always grab the 20ga slug gun. a well placed shot from a 20ga kills them just as dead.

I really wish they offered the 20ga barrel with both combos, I think it would have made a lot more Indiana buyers happy. :-\

Just asked my local shop to order a 44. I like the 357, but the 44 might be almost as versatile if you reload 44 Russian or 44 Special. Primers and powder cost roughly the same, and you make a bigger hole, what's not to love?

Don't have the combo but have both barrels.  .44 mag is nice shooter. 12 ga slug barrel does pack a wallop, but it shoots tight enough at 75 yards that all it leaves is one big hole with a 5 shot group.  Fill the bolt hole with lead shot and it won't even kill the shooter to shoot a five shot group either....
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

It's a very well behaved cartridge in a rifle config. Depending on the load it will have a little muzzle jump, but actual recoil isn't bad at all from the loads I have used...so far up too 250gr bullets.

To me recoil of my handi 44 seems a little more than a 223 but less than a 20ga. 357 isn't abad option you could start him off on 38 specials, then move him up to 357 mags. I also have a rossi 357 mag single shot and have taken numerous deer with it. the furthest was 130 paces,I double lunged him and blew out the left shoulder and he dropped in his tracks.

thanks for all the info  im going with the 44  i think he will be fine with what recoil it has he shoots hid grand fathers remington 879 20 gauge with high brass so i think he can handle the 44  why i picked the 44 is because  it is a trifecta rossi  comes with 20 gauge and 22 lr so figure three guns in one will be all right was going to get him a 223  but im just afrade if he hits the shoulder or alot of bone  we may lose the deer so with the 44 they say it has good knock down power  plus it isnt going to be 300 yard shots  just putting a red dot scope on it till he gets better with a reg. scope

Hunter ,

Brother go with the 357 mag ... With wood furniture and full house rounds , it is very subdued on percieved recoil ... The 44 has a little more ( mine has quite a bit more due to my reloads for it being stout) but nothing i dont think you could work with for your boy .. The 223 is a little trickier , If you get a 1 in 12 twist barrel  ( buying used) your high end bullet weight is going to be roughly a 55 gr bullet ... If you get he newer barrels that are all 1 in 9 then you would be good to go up to 75 gr bullets which i had very good luck with in both accuracy and game taking ability with the handi and the hornady TAP 75 gr ammo .. Recoil wasnt bad in it either .. Now if the latter in 223 is what you draw , then i would say try the 53 gr barnes triple shock all copper bullet , I want to say that i think nosler is loading that in a offering or it might have been federal.. That is of course assuming that you dont reload, If reloading is the case then you can tailor anyone of the 3 calibers to you and your boys needs..

Thats about the best i can give you on those and i have owned all three , But again i reiterate the 357 mag would be the best all around choice due to its very very mild recoil .. with 38 spcls its like a 22 lr and with full power 180 cast or jacketed its just a gentle rap ... So making it a great teacher for your little mans first rifle ;)

Hope that helps you out a little ,

I have an NEF 12 ga 3in rifled that I cut down to 20 inches. Handi doesn't even begin to describe how great thius gun is in the field. I've shot running deer while hobbling out with 40 lbs of treestand and backpack hitched to my shoulders. As for recoil, unnoticeable with antlers in the scope but a tearjerker at the bench. I drilled some holes under the recoil pad and fill them with shot if I have much bench work to do. Fortunately that isn't often. Gun groups 3 to 4 inches @100yds and I've fired 3 shots a year for the last 5 years with no scope adjustment.

Hunter i was thinking the same thing for my neices to learn on with my 44 mag ,I let the 357 go when i thought i already had them covered for a rifle that ended up having to much recoil for my liking to hand to my twins ... So I think a lighter charge under a lighter bullet in the 44 might be the order of the day .. Do start up a thread after you two get out there and let us know how it goes ;)

 TKKP ,

What about you , you get that 44 yet ? :)
