When doing genealogy you start with yourself and then your parents, your grandparents and so on.

Sources that will help you in your research:
Older family members
Family Bibles
Birth and Death records
Marriage records
Wills and Deeds
Census records
Church and Cemetery records
Old letters, old diaries and old newspapers
Old photographs(that may have a date and place written on the back as will as the names of the people involved).
Migration Patterns of early settlers

I hope this helps someone with their research
