Unbearable: Cub Stuck in a Bird Feeder Finally Freed

Burnett County (WQOW) - A bear cub is now free as a bird, thanks to the efforts of a Burnett County landowner and the DNR.  A cub had its head stuck in a bird feeder and this was no temporary problem.

The landowner called the DNR last weekend when they first saw the bear near Grantsburg.

DNR officers responded, but the mother was very protective and wouldn't let them get close. Despite the bucket on its head, the cub could still climb a tree, so it proved to be elusive.

Since the DNR was concerned the cub wasn't able to eat or drink, it set up a trap to catch mom so it could focus on rescuing the cub.  One night this week, the trap not only caught her but the cub as well.

In fact, the next day when they were discovered in the trap, the bird feeder was found next to them, in pieces.  One theory is that mom chewed the bucket off; another is that a hook on the end of the feeder was caught in the trap, which made it easier for the cub to be freed.

The bears were then released into the woods.

Was just looking at that last picture of the mama bear and it suddenly occurred that she appears to be huge. She's a big mama. Probably nothing to write home about, but we've been known to grow those Black Bear big in Wisconsin. ;)

No problem at all Peterbilt. It's my pleasure to try to contribute to the Wisconsin forum. Although I don't agree with some of our rules, I think Wisconsin is an excellent place to live and raise a family, not to mention its abundant wildlife, hunting and fishing opportunities, and clean air. Oh, the list could just go on and on... :)
