SW99/Walther p-99

Are the 9mm and .40 cal. magazines for these weapons interchangeable?
And does anyone have any other useful info on the quality and dependability of these guns? They feel really good in my hands and have sort of a cool look to them. I'm considering a purchase. The magazines are the exact same size, that's why I inquire about interchangeability. :P

I had the SW99 and shot about 100 rounds through it with no problems.  Wanted the Walther so I traded for it.  The new owner of the SW99 blew the side of the frame out the first trip to the range.  My Walther operates fine with several types of 9mm.  Don't know about the mags.

I would go with the Walther P99, the trigger pull is much better on those, than what I have seen on the SW99. The mags should be interchangable as the SW99 frames are made by Walther. I have taken the 9mm mags and loaded them with 40sw and had no problem with function of the P99. Go to, http://www.praxagora.com/lunde/WaltherP99FAQ/, for information on the P99.

BA:  of the two the Walther is the more accurate pistol.  A recent Gun Tests article ironed out the wrinkles on both and the Walther came up the winner.  There weren't any problems with reliability as both pieces functioned perfectly but the Walther took the prize in the accuracy and trigger pull categories.  Sights are the same.

Re:  the magazine interchange - I would not have thought the 40 S&W mags would hold the 9mm rounds tightly enough to assure proper feeding but if Q400 hasn't had any problems then you should be able to use either on either piece.  HTH, M2C.  Mikey.

Mikey: it is the 9mm mags that worked with the 40sw, yes the 40 mags are to big across the lips to hold the 9mm. The 9 and 40 should work in either Wather or SW99.

Tappel,

I don't understand what you meant by "blew the side out" after you sold your SW99 to a friend?  I have heard of slides breaking, flying back, and cracked frames.  Is this the frame exploding sideways?  Was he using some ultra hot handloads?

Chris,
The right side split from about even with the chamber down to the trigger guard.  No pieces "flew" off, it was more than a crack as the sides no longer lay flat and actually overlapped at the break.  Says he was using regular factory loads but I can't be sure.  S&W replaced unit without comment.  That's all I know about it.
