Old Metal Shaper
« on: June 06, 2009, 12:00:24 PM »
I bought this Potter & Johnson shaper in the mid 80s. It was made in 1916 and has been used very little. I got it from the original owner, Dana Corp. I was told that it was purchased to prove a gear design, which it did, then was put in a box til I got it. I played with it, cut some steel, some brass and a few keyways.

I just drug it out of the corner of the barn. It has developed, what I consider to be relatively minor surface rust. I am not trying to make this premo, but, it warrants respect.

Anyone have thots about A. the paint The green was factory paint and the blue was the color that Dana used for R&D machinery. I would prefer to just get rid of the surface rust.

I apololgize if I have gone OT here. I think that this could be useful making carriage parts.

Any thots will be appreciated

Since this will be used in your cannon making business, it's on topic.

If there is no pitting, just get some OOOO cabinet maker steel wool and WD-40 and scrub the rust off.

irishman,  Looks like a heavy duty piece of equipment.  I always liked the older stuff because it's usually made of heavy cast iron as opposed to cast aluminum of the more modern pieces.

Just use some P.B Blaster and let it set for a day and hit it with scotch-brite. Good as new. Good looking piece.

Michael,   Your machine is larger than ours, but small or large this type of machine was making cannon parts 150 years ago and one is still doing so in our shop today.  It's very hard to make square-cornered key slots in eccentric axle shafts any other way!  Besides, we love to watch that little shaper work.  It's a truly fascinating mechanism.

Good luck on the clean-up and repainting,

Mike and Tracy
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Michael, how about some fire engine red??. If that's a little wild then machinery grey. I saw one shaper years ago working in a machine shop. Pulled up a stool so's I could watch it run. Kinda disappointed when the machinist operating it finished what he was doing. Better than watching the boob tube. Frank

WVDAD,

I sprayed part of the workpiece holder with P.B. Blaster yesterday, came in this morning, think my shop Mouse is dead! That stuff is strong, though it worked real good. The DD..OOOO came in. It seems to work pretty well also. Am experimenting with WD40, a quick scurb, more WD40 to soak overnite then scrub some more and compare. Maybe that Mouse will come back. I like to have one....3 or more =war.

another way to remove rost is by electricity .
connect the negative from a car battery to the machine
soak a rag in a mix of water and baking soda
place the rag on the part you want to clean
put a steel plate on top of the rag with some heavy weights on top of it
connect the + to the plate
