Too Much Gun?
« on: June 19, 2009, 01:38:22 PM »
Thought I'd share this since it was one of those days....came home early amongst heavy storms. Wife said she could hear someone banging around in the gas grill on patio. So I grab my son's old Crossman's pump air rifle figuring I was going to take out that monster ground squirrel or bird that somehow got up into it. It was a nice Weber (notice I said was) and I decided to take cover off the grill. There was some noise but no big deal. I get my trusty Crossman ready to take out that vicous varmit ground squirrel cowering in the corner (at least that is what I thought in my mind) and lifted the front bar grill handle. Got it up about a foot or so and realized the 10# woodchuck that was snarling at me probably didn't take too kindly to me lifting the top on the grill. When you are only 18" away from a "killer" like this you tend to drop the grill and run like hell.......My wife is yelling and the woodchuck is trying its best to get out which it can't so the grill is bouncing around on patio. So I figure I will teach this critter a lesson and snap a pellet into it to encourage it to leave. I slowly lifted the grill top about an inch and stuck barrel into gap and tossed in a round. Not well received. Bounced around a bit making all sorts of noise. I went down to basement got some rope to tie off the handle and pull the top open while I was standing well behind it...Lifted the cover and woodchuck was laying there on grill with head between legs and not moving. 1:1,000,000 shot right between the eyes. Smoked him right there in grill. So you might say fresh "ground chuck" on grill.

That's how my son in law gets rid of the nests that hornets try to make in his grills every summer.

Muddy,
Congrats on the successful hunt!

I go out the other nite and start my grill up to preheat for some marinated chicken breasts. When I lit the gas, I noticed some popping noises, but didn't think much about until I got back out there to put the chicken on. Freakin' yellow jackets were all over the place and more than a little UPSET! Had to get out the bee spray. Didn't say anything to the wife about it though. She'da probably not eaten.

Muddy

LOL.  That has to be one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time!  Doesn't get any fresher than that! :)

Well IMHO:

1) Firing up the BBQ would have been much to easy. No fun. And do you know how bad those critters smell when you scorch 'em? Uuugggg! Your hamburgers would be tastin pretty "special" for the next month!!  :P

2) Ground Chuck on the grill. LOL.....I'm still cleaning up the water that I spit on the screen.

3) Pellet gun was a tad underpowered. Next time your at the gun shop, pick up a box of 22 shorts. You can load 'em single shot style in a ruger or browning semi-auto pistol. They won't cycle the action.....but they will "out" a G-hog at point blank range in a heartbeat.  ;D And they are no more noisy than a pellet gun. Just watch yer background if you miss for recoil. Oh....and don't miss.

Great shot!  Granny sure would have been excited ;)
I live in a city.  I had an opossum living in my wood pile driving my dog nuts.  One night I saw it in the fence.  Since the neighbors woud have had a fit if I fired a 22 I figured I'd try a pellet gun.  I grabbed a Crossman American Classic and a box of hunting pellets I had bought for this occasion.  One shot in the head at 10 yards did the trick.  I think the lession in our stories is....Shot Placement ;D  Pass the gravy please  ;D
