Contender problem

I have a Newer style Stainless Contender frame that I bought a few years back.  Took it to the range yesterday and it would not cock consistantly.  As I started to pul back the hammer, there was a click and it would pull back, but not lock as if the trigger had been pulled before trying to cock.  I clicked the action open and tried again, still click and not lock, it locked back on the 3rd try, any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated. I tried 3 different barrels and it did it on all barrels.

Not for sure but you could have a cleaning problem. Have you tried blowing it out with some air and then a little light oil. I did have that problem once and after some time I found that I had my finger on the trigger as I was cocking it and was moving the sear before it was ready to cock.

Check your trigger engagement screw too, maybe it's screwed in to far and not letting the sear set, it wouldn't hurt to check the stop screw either.

It's a miracle; the trigger tension screw, a few turns loose and no problem.  I left out the part above that I spent 6 hrs. totally taking the action apart and completely cleaning and reassembling it only to still have the problem.  I totally missed the trigger tension screw, wasn't required to disassemble the action.  Thank you, Steve and Deaconllb, I wasn't looking forward to sending in to TC.  They'll fix it for free, but the cost of shipping and long turnaround time.  Thanks again guys.

Glad you solved your problem.  While there is nothing wrong with taking the action apart to clean it, usually all that is required is to hose it out with GunScrubber or a similar solvent spray.  Whatever you do DO NOT oil the lockwork!  T/C specifically warns not to do this, it just makes things worse.  I've hunted and shot my Contenders competitively since 1975 and have never had a problem due to a dirty action - after I read the manual and stopped oiling the lockwork.   ::)
