Taurus .22 mag Tracker (mystery gun)
« on: March 21, 2009, 06:37:55 AM »
I went to my local gunshop and inquired about a .22 mag Taurus.  He said he had 2 coming in next day.
I went back and saw a blue mod. 941 6" and a stainless 4" tracker.

The 941 was OK but felt loose and not very appealing it was 8 shot.
The other was a 4" Tracker .22 mag.  It is sweet, heavy and very nice feel.  I bought it. $375 ( the other was $340, no choice there)

Here is the "mystery".  I have a Taurus catalog, and went online to Taurus as well.  There is a .22 mag Tracker stainless Mod 971 BUT it is a 7 shot.  This gun is a 9 shot. And the box is labeled M941 ss M There is no model 9 shot .22 mag Tracker listed anywhere I could find.

There are no markings on the gun to indicate model.  I know gun shop guy did not switch boxs because I asked him.

Will shoot it today, just wondered whats up with this?

I've been told and my experience bears it out, that Taurus makes limited runs of uncataloged models.  For example, I saw a snub nosed, medium frame (5 shot), Model 44C - 44 Mag in a gunshop in PA.  I could not find that model listed on the Taurus web site.  I also couldn't find it at any other dealer or even a dealer who knew what I was talking about.

It took members here, one who had one and one who had seen one on GunBroker (I think) to find one for me.

Why they would distribute uncataloged items I don't know.   ???  Unless that is, the same person who is in charge of the on-line catalog also runs their customer service...  ::)   ;)   ;D

What Atlaw said is true.  Whittaker Guns has 3 Taurus snubbies in 327 Federal on their shelf.  2 blue, 1 stainless.  It looks just like their model 605. I looked but cannot find them on their website.  I did find a mention on Gunblast that they were produced for a specific distributor.  I think this is where a lot of the uncataloged items come from.

Taurus makes 9 shot rimfires, just in 22lr.  Make sure your gun is not mismarked.  Although you should not be able to get a 22mag in a 22lr chamber.

By the way, I own one of those snub nose 44 magnums.

Now that I have this gun I would like to scope it.  Could anyone tell me what mount to use.  In the Taurus catalog the gun that closest looks like it is a Large Frame Tracker with no rib.
In the catalog it lists scope base as 10-034.
Or is there a good after market base like I saw from Weigand.  But this is shown with vent rib.

Thanks

I think you did well. I love my Tracker and the only thing to make it better is more rounds. I am afraid that the scope mount for the tracker does not work with the 4" bbl. I would give them a call first because it is a Pricey mount. Ask me how I know! J.Michael
