Is this a safe 00 buckshot load?
« on: March 26, 2009, 02:39:14 PM »
Win AA hull
WAA12 replacement wad
Win 209 primer
17.1 grains of Red Dot
9 00 buckshot stacked in 3 layers of 3

From what I read, this should be a good and safe load, but I have never messed with buckshot so I want to make sure it works without issues.  Thanks.

A different sight.  Does it not look good?  I also have Green and Blue Dot to use if someone has a load using the other materials I listed.

Here is the site I got the info from.  I am just trying to find a safe load for reloading buckshot.

I do not have my loading books with me.

He doesn't say where he got the load from and I do not like the way it is said that it will not cycle the shotgun.

I wouldn't use it.

I would not use any load that is not listed in a manual. any shot shell manual should have a load for buck shot. If you do not have one then get one.

From The Saiga Forum:
Quote
Low Metal Hull - (Win AA)
Winchester Yellow Wad: WAA12F114
22 pieces of #4 buckshot
18 grains of Alliant Red Dot powder
Winchester 209 primer
Again, From The Saiga Forum:

I substituted 9 pellets of 00 buck in this same load for the #4 buck. The loading is noticeably lighter than the #4 load, and is too large for the given wad, the crimp is very tall and bulging. Although, this has yet to stop one of the 200 that I blasted out of my MD-20! HAHAHAH 20 ROUND DRUMS! EAT THAT, FUDDY DUDDY! 100% perfect cycling with this load as well, although that bolt sure is moving slow.

That second post, I’m not sure of his mental stability, and his math or scale is off. 9 pellets of 00 Buck are heavier than 22 pellets of #4 Buck. 9 pellets of 00 weigh right about 1 1/8 ounce.

00 Buck can’t be stacked in layers of three inside a shotcup. To layer them properly, the petals must be removed. It’s no wonder he has bulges. Anyhow, I don’t like messing with Red Dot. Pressures can get way up with wad substitutions. Green Dot would be a better choice, I prefer Unique or Herco. Pressures are lower.

Just called Alliant powder and the tech there < under no ircumstances use RedDot for buckshot. It burns too quickly, ie raises pressure.

I HIGHLY suggest you get a reloading manual and follow it to a tee. You could also check out the powder manufacturers web sites for load data but be wary of internet loading recipes.
