Update on AR trigger job
« on: June 11, 2009, 04:50:23 AM »
I think you all know what I have gone through but here's the story;
Desiring a better trigger than the stock 8lb one, I sent my trigger parts to Bill Springfield (www.triggerwork.net) for his 4lb trigger mod.  Bill came highly recommended for AR trigger jobs and is reasonably priced. ($35, $40 with 'Speed Hammer mod') When I received my envelope (only 7 days from when I had mailed it), it had opened in transit and my trigger parts were lost.  I contacted Bill and let him know what happened and he said he would get another set out to me.  About 10 days later I received the new trigger parts.  I had to fit the trigger into the frame as Bill adds a positive stop that must be filed down to fit your receiver.  That was very easy to do.  My trigger now felt much smoother but was still heavy.  I waited over a month for a friend to bring over his trigger pull gauge, but finally got impatient.  So I attached a string to the trigger and to an empty milk jug and began filling it with water.  When it was full, it still didn't trip the trigger (a gallon of water is 7lbs) and required a small 'wiggle' to trip it.
I contacted Bill again and told him the situation and he said to send him the parts again.  I received them back yesterday (one week turnaround again) and again had to fit the stop to the gun.  Now I have a very short, clean trigger break.  :) I still have no trigger guage but my milk jug is about 5/8 full and it's 5lb on the bathroom scale, (which I assume is quite inaccurate at those levels).
But anyway I am very pleased with this trigger, and the weight is about right for a field gun.  It is very smooth, short, and clean breaking.  I would recomment Bill to anyone desiring a nice trigger for a very reasonable price.  I'm sure my problem was an expection as Lloyd Smale tells me he has had Bill do several triggers for him and has been very pleased.  (jump in here Lloyd)  Now that the trigger surfaces are polished and fitted, I may try a pair of JP yellow springs in the future, but for now, I'm happy the way it is.  44 Man
At this point I have to 'update' the 'update'.  I just received an email from Bill and he says my trigger tripped at 4.25 lbs on his trigger gauge.
You are never too old to have a happy childhood!

Ive had 6 ars done by him and my cetme and the triggers on my ars have run from 2.8 lbs to 3.5. the cetme is about 4.5 lbs but was over 12 before it was done. Bill has done me right and i have yet to have to file or fit anything. The triggers come with a tad bit of creap but its more like the pull of a two stage trigger as the creap is very easy to control as you take it up and stage the trigger for a light clean break. If you have them done by him make sure you go with the upgrade package with a speed hammer as the trigger pulls are so much better that i sent the first two that i had a basic package done to back to him to redo to the upgrade package. they were that much better.

44man, good to know he is such a good guy. In other words he broke even or took a loss with time involved, shipping twice and replacement parts. However his ultimate goal was a satisfied customer in the end. And he achieved that! Sounds like a very good guy to do business with for sure. Thanks for letting us know.
