Kinda strange
« on: June 20, 2009, 09:58:12 AM »
I am house sitting for a friend of mine who has 40 acres in the country. About 2:20 pm I went out to have a smoke and see if I could shoot some of the starlings that are all over the place. I went out with the.22 and look across the small paddock less than 100 yards from the house and see a coyote. I ran back inside and grabbed the .30-06 and go back out of the house. I figgured if he saw me he would run. I had to move closer to him to shoot him so I wouldn't be shooting over the horses. I got within about 50 yards and didn't even know I was there. I was watching thru the scope and figgured out why he didn't notice me. He was eating something big and dark. It was either one of the free range chickens or one of the cats. He was just finishing up eating it when i was getting ready to take the shot and he turned towards me and started watching me. I lined up the cross hairs on the middle of the chest and he turned and started trotting away. I hollard at him and he stopped to look at me and turned broadside. I put the crosshairs on his shoulder, squeezed off the round, and he dropped. When I went out to look at him I noticed he was about 45-50 pounds and looked like he had mange. He had some really thin and bald spots. Just thought I would share this.

That's really good.  You can seldom get that close to them unless you're hidden and calling.  What was he eating, cat or chicken or something else?

I went out to where I shot him and backtracked. He had a gosling out in the pasture that he ate there. I kept tracking to see where else he went. He had come all the way up into the yard and killed and ate a chicken to. This guy was looking for the easy meal and it cost him. The fur over most of his body was really thin. Thin enough that you could see his skin and big bald spots. He looked like he had been eating well tho. He was probably bouncing around from farm to farm eating chickens and stuff.

You da man Snakeman, you can come house sit for me any time. I had 9 leghorns that I bought right after Easter when they were having a clearance on them at the farm store where my son works. Something got 7 of them in one night. I'm thinking foxes since I've killed one and the neighbor has as well. All I have left now is nine Reds, 1 leghorn and two Banties. They're all secure in a 10X10 heavy fence now and they feel safe.

BTW I have a friend who lives in Olathe.

They do love feral cats, and I'm glad they do. They kill off all the game birds around our place. I have yet to get that close, they are extremely skiddish around here, nice work.

Rustinfla- Those foxes can do a number on chickens. I lived out here with my buddy for about a year. We had problems with opposums and skunks to. We killed 14 skunks in 10 days one winter. I go thru Olathe a couple of times a year. It's a nice city.

myarmor-They usually don't let me get that close either. Makes me wonder if he was really sick or something. I could care less if they get feral cats. The cats that are here are pets. They go outside to do their business and come back in. If they were feral they would get shot.
